Chapter 10 - Devin’s Desperate Betrayal and the Midnight Ambush

Two weeks passed.

Jonathan was discharged from the hospital and returned to Vance Manor under strict orders to rest his shoulder. Molly and Lily had remained at the estate, settling into a rhythm that felt dangerously like a dream.

Every morning, Jonathan would join Molly and Lily for breakfast in the sunlit conservatory. The intimidating billionaire had learned how to make animal-shaped pancakes with his uninjured arm, earning high-pitched peals of laughter from Lily. Every evening, Jonathan and Molly would sit by the roaring hearth in the library, talking for hours about books, life, and Molly’s secret recipes for lemon chiffon cake and rustic sourdough.

For the first time in her adult life, Molly felt safe.

She was beginning to blossom. Her laughter was no longer nervous; her posture was upright; her eyes held a spark of unshakeable confidence.

Jonathan looked at her not with tolerance, but with deep, simmering hunger and profound respect. Whenever he touched the small of her back to guide her through a doorway, her skin tingled for hours afterward.

However, the final remnants of the old nightmare were not quite dead.

Devin, desperate to avoid a twenty-year federal prison sentence, had managed to contact a corrupt corrections officer using smuggled cash from his old bookie. During a prisoner transfer between county facilities, Devin orchestrated a violent escape, slipping into the woods during a torrential downpour.

He was driven by one single, delusional obsession: Molly.

He believed that if he could just get to Molly, he could force her to recant her testimony, take the money from the Vance estate, and run away to Mexico.

At two o'clock on a stormy Tuesday morning, Devin scaled the outer stone wall of Vance Manor near the service entrance. He had stolen a maintenance uniform and a heavy pipe wrench from a nearby construction site.

He knew the layout from the floor plans Julian’s men had shared weeks prior.

Devin slipped through the kitchen pantry and moved silently up the servants' staircase, his eyes bloodshot, his face gaunt, his teeth bared in madness.

He reached the green suite on the second floor.

He turned the brass knob, pushed the heavy door open, and stepped into the darkened room.

"Molly," Devin hissed into the shadows, raising the heavy steel wrench. "You think you can hide in this castle with your rich boyfriend? You’re coming with me, you fat b***h!"

He lunged toward the bed.

He threw back the duvet.

The bed was empty.

Suddenly, the lights in the room snapped on with blinding brilliance.

Standing in the corner of the room, fully dressed in dark trousers and a crisp white shirt, was Jonathan Vance. Beside him stood Marcus, holding a suppressed tactical shotgun leveled directly at Devin’s chest.

Devin froze, his jaw dropping in absolute terror.

"Looking for someone?" Jonathan asked, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen.
