Chapter 7 - The Gala of Wolves and the Woman Who Held Her Head High

The Grand Horizon ballroom was a glittering sea of diamonds, champagne flutes, and predatory wealth. Over four hundred of the city’s most influential elites, politicians, and corporate titans were gathered beneath the massive crystal chandeliers.
Standing near the center of the room, holding a glass of vintage scotch, was Julian Vance—a sharp-featured, silver-haired man in his late fifties with cold, calculating eyes.
"Has Carl reported from the pier?" Julian whispered to his chief of security.
"Not yet, Mr. Vance," the man murmured. "The drop was scheduled for midnight. It is currently eleven-fifteen."
"Good. As soon as the microchip is in our hands, execute the transfer of the Swiss trusts. Jonathan will be ruined by morning."
Suddenly, the grand double doors at the entrance of the ballroom parted.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing across the silent room:
"Announcing the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global, Mr. Jonathan Vance... accompanied by Miss Molly Grant."
A collective murmur rippled through the high-society crowd.
Jonathan Vance had never brought a date to a public function in his entire ten-year tenure as head of the family. Tabloids had speculated for years that he was married only to his empire.
Jonathan stepped onto the marble landing. On his arm was Molly.
She had been terrified in the car, her palms sweating against the velvet of her dress. But as Jonathan placed his large, warm hand over hers, he had whispered: Walk with your head held high. You are the strongest person in this room.
And she did.
Molly moved with breathtaking poise. The midnight-blue velvet gown caught the light with every step, showcasing her voluptuous figure with an undeniable, magnetic elegance. Around her neck, cleaned and polished to a dazzling mirror shine, hung the silver oval locket.
Julian Vance’s glass froze halfway to his lips.
His face turned an ash-gray color. His knuckles went white against the crystal.
"Impossible," Julian hissed beneath his breath.
The crowd parted like the Red Sea as Jonathan led Molly straight toward the center of the ballroom. High-society matrons who usually sneered at anyone outside their tax bracket stared in awe at Molly’s natural, luminous beauty and the fierce, protective way Jonathan held her close to his side.
"Uncle Julian," Jonathan greeted, his voice cool and ringing with authority. "You look unwell. Is the champagne not to your liking?"
Julian forced a grotesque, stiff smile onto his face, his eyes darting frantically between the silver locket on Molly’s chest and Jonathan’s mocking gray eyes.
"Jonathan," Julian choked out. "I... I did not expect you to attend tonight. And who is your lovely companion?"
"This is Molly Grant," Jonathan announced loudly enough for the surrounding council members and investors to hear clearly. "The woman who gave my sister Clara comfort and sanctuary in her final days. And the woman who has held the Vance family master ledger safely in her possession for seven years."
Gasps erupted around the perimeter.
Several board members stepped forward, their eyes widening.
"The master ledger?" one senior director asked. "Jonathan, we thought that data was lost with Clara!"
"It was not lost," Jonathan declared, turning to face the board members. "It was entrusted to a woman of true honor. And within that locket is the full documentation of forty million dollars in illegal defense contract kickbacks orchestrated by Julian Vance."
Julian’s face twisted into a mask of pure, unbridled malice. "You’re bluffing! That locket is empty! You have no proof!"

Jonathan smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that signaled the end of a bloodline.
"Marcus," Jonathan said calmly. "Display the feeds on the ballroom projectors."
