Chapter 8 - Standing in the Shadows Behind Locked Steel Doors

The next seventy-two hours were an unrelenting gauntlet of pain, sweat, and sheer willpower.

In the private gym on the top floor, Clare stood opposite Sebastian within the parallel bars. Gabriel watched from the perimeter, a medical crash kit and a loaded firearm both within arm's reach.

“Again,” Clare ordered, her voice steady despite the exhaustion pulling at her limbs.

Sebastian gripped the bars, his biceps bulging beneath his drenched athletic shirt. He engaged his core, locked his pelvis, and forced his weight down through his heels.

He rose.

His knees wobbled violently as the dormant motor units fired in chaotic bursts. Sweat poured down his face, his teeth grinding with such force a speck of blood appeared on his lower lip.

“Let go of the left bar,” Clare commanded softly.

Sebastian hesitated, then released his left hand.

“Now the right.”

“Clare—”

“Trust me, Sebastian. Look at me. Don't look at the floor.”

Sebastian locked his eyes onto hers. Slowly, trembling with the monumental effort of reconnecting seven years of severed pathways, he lifted his right hand from the steel bar.

He stood.

Unsupported. Balanced solely on his own two feet.

For five eternal seconds, the entire room ceased to breathe.

Then, his left knee buckled.

Clare stepped in instantly, catching him beneath his shoulders, using her entire body weight to brace him before he hit the mat. They collapsed together onto the thick foam cushions, Sebastian’s massive frame half-draped over her, his heaving chest pressing against hers.

Neither of them moved.

Sebastian looked down at her face, his breathing ragged and hot against her cheek. Clare’s hands were splayed across his broad, muscular back, feeling the wild, furious beating of his heart.

“You stood,” she whispered, tears shining in her eyes. “You did it.”

Sebastian’s hand came up, his rough fingers tracing the line of her jawline, gently brushing away a stray tear. “Because you were there to catch me.”

The tension between them was unbearable, an intoxicating mix of survival, triumph, and unspoken love. Sebastian leaned down, his lips hovering millimeters from hers.

“Clare...”

A soft knock at the gym door broke the spell.

Gabriel stepped forward, clearing his throat. “Boss. Dr. Vance has arrived from the hospital with the final preoperative clearance for Oliver. And... Marco has just arrived at the lower gates with an armed convoy.”
