Chapter 10 - Dinner with the Wolves and the Scent of Treachery

Clare didn't think. She seized the heavy stainless steel IV pole beside the medical cart and swung it with all the leverage her physical therapy training gave her.

The metal rod struck the intruder across the side of his helmet with a deafening CLANG.

The man stumbled backward, his weapon discharging into the ceiling drywall. He recovered instantly, his gloved hand reaching out to grab Clare by the throat, slamming her against the wall.

“Where is the boy?” the mercenary hissed behind his ballistic mask.

Clare clawed at his grip, gasping for air.

A deafening gunshot split the room.

The mercenary’s eyes went wide. A single red hole appeared in the center of his forehead. He collapsed like a puppet with cut strings, revealing Gabriel standing in the doorway, smoke curling from the barrel of his sidearm.

Behind Gabriel stood Sebastian, seated in his chair, his face a terrifying portrait of absolute fury.

“Clare!” Sebastian pushed his wheels forward rapidly, reaching her side. He caught her as she slid down the wall, his hands checking her neck where red bruises were already forming. “Are you hurt?”

“Oliver...” she choked out.

Oliver crawled out from under the bed, throwing his arms around Clare’s waist. “Mom! I stayed quiet! I did what Sebastian said!”

Sebastian reached down, placing a massive, protective hand on Oliver’s head. His voice was deathly quiet, carrying a lethal promise that sent shivers through the room.

“Gabriel,” Sebastian whispered.

“Yes, boss?”

“Marco brought wolves into my home. It’s time we feed them.”

Sebastian looked at Clare, his eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying authority. “The gala is tonight. We aren’t waiting until Friday.”
