Chapter 14 - The Miracle on the Edge of the Abyss

Four days later, the surgical waiting room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was completely quiet.
Sebastian sat in an armchair beside Clare, his hand clasping hers tightly. He wore a simple civilian sweater, looking not like a feared crime boss, but like a devoted father waiting for news.
The double doors swung open, and Dr. Vance emerged, pulling down his surgical mask.
Clare shot to her feet, her breath trapped in her throat. “Doctor?”
Dr. Vance smiled broadly. “The procedure was a complete, unqualified success, Ms. Bennett. Oliver’s pulmonary vessels have been reconstructed perfectly. He will make a full recovery. In six months, he’ll be running track if he wants to.”
Clare let out a sob of pure gratitude, collapsing into Sebastian’s embrace. He wrapped his powerful arms around her, lifting her off her feet as he buried his face in her hair.
“He’s safe, Clare,” Sebastian whispered into her ear, his own eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Your boy is safe.”
An hour later, they were allowed into the recovery room. Oliver was awake, breathing smoothly and deeply without the hum of any filtration machines for the first time in his life.
“Mom!” Oliver whispered, his voice clear and strong. “Look! No mask!”
Clare sat on the edge of the bed, kissing Oliver’s forehead repeatedly. “You did it, my brave boy. You did it.”
Oliver looked past his mother to Sebastian, who was standing tall at the foot of the bed, unsupported by any cane or chair.
“Sebastian!” Oliver beamed. “You’re standing up! You’re really tall!”
Sebastian laughed—a warm, booming sound that filled the sterile hospital room with genuine joy. He walked over to the side of the bed and gently took Oliver’s small hand in his.
“I promised you we’d play chess standing up next time, didn't I, partner?” Sebastian smiled.

“Yeah!” Oliver grinned. “And I’m gonna beat you!”
“We’ll see about that, young man,” Sebastian said softly, looking at Clare with a devotion that promised a lifetime of protection and happiness.
