Chapter 7 - The Unforgivable Betrayal Inside the Lombardi Family Vault

Three weeks after moving into the Lombardi estate, Oliver was transferred to the penthouse’s private medical suite. The boy was thriving. His cheeks had regained their color, his laughter echoed through the once-silent marble hallways, and he had taken an immediate, fearless liking to the imposing mafia boss.

To Clare’s astonishment, Sebastian treated Oliver not with cold indifference, but with a gentle, patient authority. He taught Oliver how to play chess on the grand wooden board in the library, never letting the boy win easily, but praising every smart tactical maneuver.

Late one evening, while Oliver was asleep, Clare entered the private office to deliver Sebastian’s progress charts.

The doors were ajar. Inside, Sebastian was in a secure video conference with the syndicate’s five regional capos. Clare paused in the hallway, not intending to eavesdrop, but the tension in the voices held her frozen.

“Marco has called for a vote of no confidence,” one of the older capos rasped through the speaker. “He says you are unfit to lead, Sebastian. He claims you are hiding a mistress and her bastard child in the tower while neglecting the port contracts.”

Sebastian’s voice was like ice. “Marco is welcome to raise his concerns at the quarterly gala on Friday night.”

“He has the backing of the Moretti family,” the capo warned. “If you cannot walk into that ballroom on your own two feet, the council will vote to strip your titles and divide your assets. The bylaws are clear, Sebastian. A paralyzed don cannot lead the Chicago commission.”

“Friday night,” Sebastian repeated calmly. “Tell Marco to prepare his speech. He will need it.”

The call disconnected.

Clare stepped into the room, her heart pounding. “Friday? Sebastian, that’s four days away. You can’t walk unassisted yet! You’ve only managed ten paces with parallel bars!”

Sebastian turned his chair to face her. “Then we have four days to make it twenty paces without bars.”

“It’s medically reckless!” Clare cried, stepping closer, her hands gesturing passionately. “If you fall, if you rupture a stabilizing graft or cause an acute disc herniation, you could permanently destroy the remaining nerve pathways!”

Sebastian grabbed her arms, pulling her down toward him until she was kneeling before his chair, their faces inches apart.

“If I don’t walk into that room on Friday, Clare, Marco takes everything. He takes this tower. He cuts the funding for Oliver’s lung treatments. He wipes out everyone loyal to me—including you.”

His gaze bored into hers with terrifying passion.

“I am not doing this just to reclaim a throne, Clare. I am doing this to protect the only two people who made me feel like a human being again.”

Clare looked into his fierce, unyielding eyes and felt the breath catch in her chest. The line between healer and protector, between duty and desire, shattered completely.

“Then we don’t stop training,” she whispered. “Not until your legs obey you.”
