Chapter 8 - The Raid

"NYPD! DON'T MOVE! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
The apartment was instantly flooded with blinding tactical lights and the deafening roar of shouting men. Half a dozen heavily armed SWAT officers in full tactical gear poured through the shattered doorway, their assault rifles raised and leveled directly at Julian's chest.
"DROP TO YOUR KNEES! HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD! DO IT NOW!"
Julian’s reaction was terrifyingly fast. Instead of dropping to the floor, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, compact semi-automatic pistol he had concealed in Ethan's waistband.
In a fraction of a second, he spun around and grabbed me by the collar of my cardigan, yanking me against his chest as a human shield, pressing the cold steel barrel of the gun against my right temple.
"BACK UP!" Julian screamed, his voice turning shrill with manic adrenaline. "BACK THE HELL UP OR I’LL BLOW HER HEAD OFF!"
The tactical team froze, spreading out in a semi-circle across our living room, laser sights dancing across Julian’s forehead, chest, and shoulders.
"Hold your fire! Hold!" Detective Morgan shouted as he stepped through the breach, his standard-issue Glock drawn and pointed at Julian. "Julian Cole! Drop the weapon! It’s over! We have the storage unit, we have the crash accelerant receipts, and we have your entire confession recorded on high-gain audio! You're done!"
"I AM ETHAN PARKER!" Julian shrieked, his arm tightening around my neck like an iron band, cutting off my airflow. "Look at my face, you stupid bastards! Look at my face! I am Ethan Parker! You shoot me, you’re shooting an innocent man!"
"Ethan Parker's body is in the county morgue, Julian," Morgan said, taking a slow, calculated step forward. "You're a fake. You're an imitation of a better man, and you know it."
"Shut up! SHUT UP!" Julian roared.
I could feel his chest heaving wildly against my back. His gun hand was trembling against my temple. The manic fury that had consumed him was turning into unhinged panic.
I knew that in his twisted mind, dying here as Ethan Parker was better than going to prison as Julian Cole. If he pulled that trigger, he would kill me and force the police to gun him down, ending the charade in blood.
I couldn't let Ethan's memory die with me.
Summoning every ounce of strength and rage left in my body, I threw my head backward with violent force.
The back of my skull struck Julian squarely across the bridge of his nose.
A loud, sickening CRACK echoed through the room.
Julian screamed in pain, his grip on my neck slipping as blood exploded from his broken nose. The gun tilted away from my temple.
"NOW!" Morgan bellowed.
I dropped straight down to the floor, tucking into a ball.
A deafening flashbang grenade detonated with a blinding flash of white light and a concussive boom that rattled the windowpanes.
Through the ringing in my ears, I saw two SWAT officers tackle Julian to the hardwood floor with crushing momentum. The pistol clattered across the floor, sliding under the coffee table.
Julian fought like a rabid animal, thrashing, screaming obscenities, spitting blood onto the rug as four officers pinned his limbs, wrenching his arms behind his back until the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
"Target secure! Suspect in custody!" an officer shouted.
Detective Morgan rushed over to where I was curled on the floor. He dropped to one knee, gently pulling me upright. "Natalie! Are you hit? Are you okay?"
I shook my head, gasping for air, clutching Morgan's arm as tears poured down my face. "I'm okay... I'm okay..."
Across the room, two officers hauled Julian to his feet. His face was covered in blood, his tailored suit ripped, his dark eyes burning with pure, unadulterated madness.
As they dragged him toward the door, he locked eyes with me one last time.
"You'll never get rid of me, Natalie!" he screamed, his voice echoing down the hallway. "Every time you close your eyes, you'll see my face! Because his face is MY face!"

The officers shoved him into the elevator, and the doors slid shut, cutting off his screams.
I collapsed against the sofa, burying my face in my hands, sobbing for the husband I had lost, the nightmare I had survived, and the terrifying realization that the face of the man I loved had been permanently desecrated by evil.
