Chapter 13 - The Reckoning

When I opened my eyes, the harsh white light of a hospital room greeted me.
The steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor filled the room. Detective Morgan was sitting in an armchair beside my bed, sipping coffee from a paper cup, looking exhausted but victorious.
"Welcome back, Natalie," Morgan said with a warm, relieved smile as I blinked against the light.
"Marcus..." I croaked, my throat raw and dry.
"We got him," Morgan said, leaning forward and handing me a cup of water with a straw. "The FBI intercepted Vance in the bank’s underground parking garage trying to flee in an armored town car. His private security team engaged federal agents, but they were taken down in seconds."
I took a slow sip of water, the cool liquid soothing my burning throat. "And the flash drive?"
"Safe and fully decrypted," Morgan replied, his eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction. "The Department of Justice processed every single file. It’s an open-and-shut case of racketeering, money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and corporate treason. Vance is being held without bail in federal custody. The U.S. Attorney is seeking life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
Tears of immense relief slipped down my cheeks.
The monster who had pulled the strings, who had turned Julian's twisted envy into a lethal weapon against Ethan, was finally brought to his knees.
"What about Julian?" I asked quietly.
Morgan's expression hardened slightly. "When the news broke that Marcus Vance had been arrested and that Vance had turned state's evidence admitting that Julian was hired as a hitman, Julian completely broke down in his cell. He waived all his trial rights and entered a formal guilty plea to first-degree murder."
"He's going away forever?"
"Supermax facility in upstate New York," Morgan confirmed. "He will spend twenty-three hours a day in an eight-by-ten concrete box. He will never see the sun, he will never touch another human being, and he will never say Ethan’s name again."
I laid my head back against the pillow, closing my eyes.

For the first time in months, the crushing weight on my chest vanished. The shadows that had haunted my home, my mind, and my memories had been incinerated by the light of truth.
Ethan’s name was cleared. His legacy was restored. His sacrifice was honored.
