Chapter 12 - The Architect of Shadows

The voice coming through the grate belonged to Marcus Vance.

I backed away from the locked door, clutching the flash drive and Ethan's letter against my chest in the pitch-black booth.

"Marcus," I said, forcing my voice to remain calm, projecting strength I didn't feel. "The federal authorities already know. If I don't walk out of this vault in ten minutes, the entire NYPD and the FBI will be through those doors."

A low, patronizing chuckle filtered down through the metal vent.

"Do you really think I'd let you walk into Manhattan Trust without monitoring the system?" Vance said smoothly. "I sit on the board of directors of this bank, Natalie. When your key was logged into the vault scanner, my private security team was already in the elevator."

"Julian confessed to everything," I said, stalling for time as I quietly reached into my coat pocket and hit the emergency SOS button on my smartphone, transmitting my live GPS coordinates to Detective Morgan. "You're tied to the murder, Marcus. The crash, the offshore funds, the laundering—it's all on this flash drive."

"Julian is a psychotic lunatic in a padded cell at Rikers," Vance replied dismissively. "His testimony is legally useless. But that flash drive in your hands... that is the only physical link connecting my name to Ethan's unfortunate demise."

A soft hiss sounded from the ceiling.

A faint, sweet chemical smell began filling the small concrete booth.

Gas.

My eyes widened in panic. Vance wasn't sending guards in to shoot me; he was pumping an incapacitating narcotic through the ventilation system to make my death look like a sudden, tragic asphyxiation accident inside a malfunctioning bank vault.

"You'll sleep quietly, Natalie," Vance's voice echoed through the vent, fading as he walked away. "And Ethan's tragic family story will finally come to its quiet, tragic conclusion."

"Marcus! MARCUS!" I screamed, slamming my fists against the heavy reinforced steel door.

The air grew thick and heavy. A wave of intense dizziness washed over me. My knees buckled, and I slid down the steel door to the floor, fighting with every shred of willpower to keep my eyes open.

No. Not like this. Ethan didn't die for me to give up in the dark.

I pulled my scarf over my mouth and nose, filtering out as much of the heavy fumes as possible. I crawled on my hands and knees toward the far corner of the booth where the internal emergency fire alarm was mounted on the wall.

My vision was tunneling into black. My limbs felt like lead.

With my final ounce of conscious strength, I picked up the heavy metal safety box and hurled it with all my might into the glass casing of the fire alarm.

SMASH!

The high-pitched, deafening roar of the bank's industrial fire alarm exploded through the vault, triggering the emergency safety protocols.

The building's master system automatically overrode all electronic locks, venting the chamber with high-pressure oxygen and swinging the heavy steel vault doors wide open.

Through the flashing strobe lights of the emergency sirens, I heard the thunderous sound of heavy boots sprinting down the marble stairs.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

Gunfire erupted in the outer lobby. Shouts, shattering glass, and the sharp crack of flashbangs tore through the underground vault.

As darkness pulled me under, I saw the towering silhouette of Detective Morgan and a team of federal agents storming through the vault entrance, their weapons raised.

"I’ve got her! She’s alive! Get the medics down here now!"
