Chapter 15 - The Dawn After Darkness

One year after the nightmare began, on a crisp November morning, I walked through the iron gates of Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

The autumn leaves formed a rich, golden carpet beneath the towering oak trees. The morning sun broke through the canopy, casting long, peaceful beams of light across the rolling green hills.

I walked up the gentle slope to a quiet, secluded knoll overlooking the Manhattan skyline in the distance.

There, beneath the shade of an ancient weeping willow, sat a beautiful, polished granite headstone:

ETHAN PARKER

Beloved Husband, True Heart, Unbroken Spirit.

"Love is stronger than death, and light conquers every shadow."

I knelt down beside the stone, brushing away a few fallen leaves. I placed a bouquet of white roses against the granite base.

I closed my eyes, letting the cool autumn breeze brush across my face.

For the longest time, I had feared that whenever I thought of Ethan, I would only see the horrifying, twisted reflection of Julian’s face. I had feared that the trauma would forever poison the precious memories of the man I loved.

But kneeling there in the peaceful morning light, I realized the darkness had lost.

When I pictured Ethan, I didn't see the car crash. I didn't see the morgue. I didn't see the imposter in the dark.

I saw Ethan laughing behind the college library with garlic bread on his breath.

I saw Ethan holding my hand on the cliffs of Amalfi.

I saw the man who loved me with a fierce, protective devotion that reached beyond the grave to save my life.

I touched the engraved letters of his name one last time.

"I'm safe, Ethan," I whispered, a peaceful, genuine smile gracing my lips. "We won. You can rest now."

I stood up, took a deep, full breath of the clean autumn air, and turned toward the path leading out of the cemetery.
