Chapter 5 - The Detective’s Playbook

The bell above the door chimed softly as I pushed into the diner on 2nd Avenue. The smell of frying grease, black coffee, and toasted rye hung thick in the air.
I spotted Detective Morgan immediately. He was sitting in the corner booth with his back to the wall, dressed in an unbuttoned trench coat over a dark suit, sipping black coffee. He was a man in his late forties, with weathered features, graying temples, and sharp, observant eyes that had seen too much of New York’s dark underbelly.
I slid into the vinyl booth across from him. Without a word, I reached into my tote bag, pulled out Julian’s leather-bound journal, and laid it on the Formica table between us.
Morgan didn't ask questions immediately. He opened the journal and began reading.
As he flipped through the entries detailing the stalking, the identical appendectomy scar Julian had surgically obtained in Mexico to match his brother, and the meticulously planned murder on the FDR Drive, Morgan's jaw visibly tightened.
"Jesus Christ," Morgan muttered under his breath, closing the book. He looked up at me, his eyes dark with empathy and anger. "I've worked homicide in this city for twenty-two years, Mrs. Parker. I’ve seen some twisted things, but this is pure psychological depravity."
"You believe me?" I asked, my voice cracking with emotion.
"I believed something was wrong the moment I saw that crash scene," Morgan replied, leaning forward. "The skid marks on the FDR didn't match an accidental drift. The steering angle indicated the Audi was intentionally rammed into that barrier at full throttle. We found traces of an accelerant in the engine bay that caused the post-crash explosion. Whoever staged that accident wanted the body incinerated beyond visual recognition."
"So what do we do?" I asked desperately. "Can you arrest him right now? He's at Ethan's office on Park Avenue."
Morgan shook his head slowly. "That's the dangerous part, Natalie. If I walk into his office right now with two patrol units and cuff him, his high-priced corporate lawyers will have him out on bail before midnight. Identical twins share identical nuclear DNA. A standard blood panel won't differentiate Julian from Ethan. Julian has the real Ethan's legal identity documents, his wedding ring, his fingerprint registered on your phone, and twenty-four hours of established behavior acting as your husband."
"So he gets away with it?!" I gasped, panic rising in my throat.
"No," Morgan said firmly, grabbing my hand across the table. "He doesn't get away with a damn thing. But to put him away for first-degree murder, kidnapping, and identity theft with zero chance of parole, we need irrefutable physical evidence that links him directly to the staging of that crash."
"What kind of evidence?"
"We need the original vehicle key from the crash, the secondary burner phone he used to trigger the car's electronics, or an un-coerced spoken confession on a wire," Morgan explained. "And more importantly: we need to find where Julian stored his own original legal identity documents before he wiped himself off the map."
"I found his suit in our closet," I said quickly. "The monogram says J. Cole. And I have the keycard to the Brooklyn storage unit where he kept surveillance photos of me."
"That's our smoking gun," Morgan's eyes flashed with intensity. "My forensics team is heading to that Brooklyn unit right now with an emergency warrant. But we have a critical window here. Julian doesn't know you found the storage locker. He thinks you’re still the grieving, confused wife waiting for him at home."
"You want me to go back," I said, the color draining from my face as the realization hit me.
Morgan looked at me with deep concern. "I won't force you. If you tell me no, I will place you in protective custody right this second. But if you walk into that apartment tonight and act like everything is normal, you keep him in place while we process the Brooklyn evidence and set up an arrest perimeter."
I closed my eyes for a brief moment. I pictured Ethan's warm smile, the way he held my hand when we walked through the snow, the life we had built together that had been stolen by a monster.
If I ran into hiding, Julian might realize the trap was closing, destroy the remaining evidence, and slip away under another forged identity.

I opened my eyes.
"Put a wire on me, Detective," I said, my voice steadying with a cold resolve I didn't know I possessed. "I'm going home."
