Chapter 11 - Box 882

The next morning, rain lashed against the granite facade of the Manhattan Trust Bank on Wall Street.

I walked into the grand, marble-pillared lobby, dressed in an unassuming trench coat and dark sunglasses. In my purse was Ethan’s original safe deposit key—the small brass key marked 882 that I had found hidden inside the lining of his college diploma frame when I packed up the penthouse.

I presented my ID and Ethan's death certificate to the bank manager, who escorted me down into the subterranean vault. The heavy steel door, three feet thick, swung open with a muffled hydraulic hiss.

The manager led me to a private viewing booth, unlocked Box 882 with his master key, inserted my brass key, and pulled out a long, heavy metal safety box.

"Take all the time you need, Mrs. Parker," the manager said politely, stepping out and locking the booth door behind him.

My hands trembled as I lifted the metal lid.

Inside the box were three items:

A high-capacity, military-grade encrypted flash drive.

A handwritten letter from Ethan, dated one week before his death.

A photograph of Ethan, Julian, and a third man standing in front of a private jet.

I picked up Ethan's letter. Unfolding the crisp paper, my eyes filled with tears as I recognized his genuine, right-handed penmanship:

My dearest Natalie,

If you are reading this, it means my worst fears have come to pass, and I was unable to protect myself. I am so sorry for bringing this darkness into your life.

Two years ago, when Julian found me, I thought it was a miracle. I wanted to help my brother. I introduced him to my business partners at Apex Global Capital—specifically our managing partner, Marcus Vance.

What I didn't know was that Vance was using Julian's desperate need for money to run an international money-laundering network through our private equity funds. When I uncovered the fraud three months ago, I threatened to take the evidence to the SEC and the Department of Justice.

Vance turned Julian against me. He promised Julian that if he helped eliminate me and assumed my identity, Julian would inherit my share of the firm and millions in offshore accounts.

The flash drive in this box contains the complete financial ledgers, encrypted emails, and wire transfers proving that Marcus Vance orchestrated the entire plot. Julian was the weapon, but Vance was the hand pulling the trigger.

Give this to the federal authorities, Natalie. Don't trust anyone else.

I love you beyond this life.

Ethan.

I pressed the letter to my lips, weeping silently in the sterile bank booth.

Ethan hadn't just been a victim of a psychotic brother; he had been murdered because he refused to compromise his integrity. Marcus Vance—one of the most powerful and politically connected billionaires in New York finance, a man who had attended our dinner parties and smiled in my living room—was the true architect of Ethan's death.

I plugged the flash drive into the secure tablet I had brought with me. The files opened instantly, displaying gigabytes of damning financial records, offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, and encrypted chat logs between Marcus Vance and Julian planning the exact logistics of the car crash on FDR Drive.

Suddenly, the lights inside the private viewing booth flickered and went out.

The electronic lock on the booth door gave a sharp, mechanical click.

May you like

A low, familiar voice spoke through the ventilation grate above my head.

"You should have left well enough alone, Natalie."
