Chapter 9 - The First Taste Of Peace In A World Built On Gunfire

For the next two months, my life transformed into something I had only ever read about in fairy tales.

Carl Jenkins was officially sentenced to twenty-six years in federal prison with no possibility of parole, his transfer completed in absolute secrecy under Ronan’s ironclad supervision. The dark cloud that had hovered over my life for years had completely vanished.

I began working alongside Ronan at Hayes Enterprises as his private philanthropic coordinator, managing millions of dollars in charitable grants for domestic violence shelters, women's education programs, and community healthcare initiatives across the state.

I had my own office on the seventy-ninth floor, overlooking the sparkling bay. I had financial independence, professional respect, and a purpose that healed the old wounds inside my soul.

And every single evening, Ronan and I were together.

We cooked dinners together in the penthouse kitchen—Ronan, the most feared man in the city, laughing as he struggled to flip homemade pancakes while I rolled out fresh pasta dough. We read books beside the grand marble fireplace late into the night.

One rainy Tuesday evening, while a thunderstorm raged outside the glass walls of the penthouse, Ronan walked into the library and found me standing near the bookshelf, holding a worn copy of Wuthering Heights.

He walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

“What are you thinking about, little bird?” he whispered into my hair.

I leaned back against his broad chest, closing my eyes and listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

“I was thinking about the night you locked the doors in the Obsidian Room,” I murmured. “I was so terrified of you, Ronan. I thought you were going to destroy me.”

Ronan turned me around in his arms, his gray eyes soft with deep, unyielding devotion.

“I would destroy the entire world before I ever let harm come to you, Sadie,” he said, his voice thick with raw emotion. “You saved me, too. Before you walked into that room with that tray of whiskey, I was just a ghost living inside an empire of blood and concrete. You gave me something to live for.”

He leaned down, cupping my face in both of his warm, gentle hands, and pressed his lips against mine.

The kiss was sweet, tender, and intoxicating—a promise of protection, passion, and an unbreakable future. I wound my arms around his neck, kissing him back with all the love and gratitude bursting inside my chest.
