Chapter 5 - When A Monster Meets An Emperor: Carl’s Fatal Mistake

Panic seized my chest. I grabbed Ronan’s forearm, my fingers digging into his rolled-up sleeve. “Did he hurt Thomas? Did he hurt anyone at the lounge?”
“No,” Ronan said, his voice dropping into a dark, calm cadence that somehow reassured me more than any soft words could. “Thomas called my security team the moment Carl walked through the front doors screaming your name. Carl didn't even make it past the coat check.”
Ronan tapped the tablet screen, switching the display to a live surveillance feed from an underground holding facility beneath the Hayes Tower.
On the screen, Carl Jenkins was sitting in a bare concrete room, handcuffed to a steel table. His clothes were rumpled, his hair disheveled, and his face was twisted in a mixture of drunken rage and growing terror. Two of Ronan’s armed enforcers stood silently behind him, their faces completely emotionless.
“You... you captured him?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“He walked right into my territory making threats,” Ronan replied coldly. “He claimed he owned you. He told the lounge manager that if you weren't returned to him within the hour, he would burn The Continental to the ground.”
Ronan stood up from the armchair, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt.
“A man who abuses a defenseless woman in the dark is a coward,” Ronan said, looking down at me with absolute certainty. “A coward who tries to threaten my people in broad daylight is a fool.”
“What are you going to do to him?” I asked, torn between a deep, primal fear of Carl and the shock of seeing my tormentor completely stripped of his power.
“Whatever you want me to do, Sadie,” Ronan answered without hesitation.
I stared at him, stunned. “What?”
“I don't make decisions about your abuser without your consent,” Ronan said, his slate-gray eyes softening as he looked into mine. “For nine months, that parasite took away your voice, your money, your safety, and your dignity. I am not going to take away your agency too. He is locked downstairs. The law cannot protect him from me, and the Morettis won't lift a finger to save him once they realize he belongs to Hayes Enterprises.”
He walked closer to the bed, reaching out to gently touch the edge of the healing bruise on my cheek.
“If you want him handed over to the police with enough evidence to put him away in a maximum-security prison for twenty years, it’s done. If you want him erased from the face of this earth so you never have to fear him breathing the same air again, say the word. The choice is entirely yours.”
I looked from the screen—where Carl was currently weeping and begging the guards for a glass of water—back to Ronan Hayes.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't a victim cowering on a kitchen floor.
I had an emperor standing beside me, offering me the sword.
