Chapter 13 - Unraveling The Dark Scars Beneath The Billionaire’s Pristine Armor

Late that night, after the adrenaline of the citywide raid had settled, Ronan and I sat together in the penthouse master suite before a roaring fire.
He had removed his jacket and tie, unbuttoning the top buttons of his white dress shirt. For the first time, he seemed completely exhausted, the heavy mantle of leadership weighing on his broad shoulders.
I sat beside him on the plush carpet, leaning my head against his knee.
“Tell me about your sister, Ronan,” I asked softly.
Ronan went silent for a long moment, staring into the dancing amber flames of the fireplace.
He slowly reached up and traced the faint silver scar running along his wrist.
“Her name was Claire,” Ronan began, his voice thick with raw, suppressed grief. “She was two years younger than me. Gentle. Kind. She loved painting watercolors. When our parents died in a car crash, I took over the family business to protect her.”
He swallowed hard, his jaw tightening.
“A rival syndicate boss named Marcus Vance—no relation to you, ironic as it sounds—wanted leverage against our family. He sent three men to her apartment. They broke her ribs. They beat her until she couldn't breathe. I arrived thirty minutes too late.”
Tears welled in Ronan’s gray eyes, reflecting the firelight.
“She died in my arms in that hospital room, Sadie. And for ten years, every time I closed my eyes, all I saw was her face, covered in bruises, wondering why her big brother wasn't there to save her.”
He looked down at me, his hand reaching out to tenderly cup my cheek.
“When you walked into the Obsidian Room that night, with that sweat cutting through your makeup and revealing those purple marks on your cheekbone... it felt like God was giving me a second chance to do what I failed to do a decade ago.”
I sat up on my knees, wrapping both arms around his neck, pulling his head down against my shoulder.

“You didn't fail Claire, Ronan,” I whispered into his ear, kissing the side of his neck as my own tears fell. “You honor her memory every single day. And you saved me. You gave me my life back.”
Ronan buried his face in my hair, his powerful arms tightening around my waist as if he would never let me go. In the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse, the king of the city finally allowed himself to be healed by the love of the woman he had rescued.
