Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind The Broken Ribs And The Envelope In The Floorboards

The pain medication Dr. Miller gave me pulled me into the deepest, most dreamless sleep I had experienced in years.

When I finally woke up, bright morning sunlight was pouring through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. For a terrifying second, panic seized my chest. The sun was up. Carl would be awake. He would be screaming for his breakfast. He would find the empty floorboard in the closet.

I sat bolt upright, gasping as the medical brace supported my healing ribs.

Then I looked around.

The plush white carpet. The king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets. The silent, climate-controlled air that smelled of fresh linen and expensive flowers.

I wasn't in Carl's filthy apartment. I was eighty stories above the city, inside the fortress of Ronan Hayes.

A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door.

“Come in,” I called out hesitantly, pulling the duvet up to my chin.

The door opened, and a woman in her late forties with kind brown eyes and a tailored charcoal dress entered carrying a silver tray laden with fresh fruit, poached eggs, whole-grain toast, and steaming herbal tea. Behind her, two younger staff members carried three rolling racks filled with designer clothes, coats, and shoes—all brand new, with the tags still attached.

“Good morning, Miss Vance,” the woman said warmly, setting the breakfast tray across my lap. “My name is Clara. I’m Mr. Hayes’s head of household. Mr. Hayes instructed us to prepare a full wardrobe for you in your exact sizes.”

I stared at the racks of cashmere sweaters, tailored trousers, silk blouses, and soft wool coats in complete disbelief. “I... I can't accept any of this. I don't have any money to pay for it.”

Clara smiled gently, her eyes full of maternal warmth. “Mr. Hayes doesn't accept payments, child. He provides. Please, eat your breakfast while it’s hot. Dr. Miller said you are severely malnourished.”

As I took my first bite of the eggs—rich, buttery, and seasoned to perfection—the double doors to the suite swung open, and Ronan walked in.

He was dressed in a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, corded muscles and a faint silver scar running along his left wrist. His dark hair was slightly damp from a morning shower, and his sharp jawline was freshly shaved.

Clara and the staff bowed their heads respectfully and quietly exited the room, closing the heavy doors behind them.

Ronan pulled an armchair up to the side of the bed and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees. He looked at the breakfast tray, nodding in approval when he saw I had already eaten half the plate.

“How do the ribs feel?” he asked.

“Better,” I admitted quietly. “The medicine worked. The brace helps me breathe.”

“Good.” Ronan reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek tablet, sliding it across the duvet toward me. “Take a look.”

I looked down at the screen.

Displayed on the tablet was a complete police dossier on Carl Jenkins. Mugshots from five years ago. Arrest records for aggravated assault, domestic battery, grand theft auto, and illegal weapons possession.

Beneath his criminal record was a detailed bank statement showing dozens of massive gambling debts owed to an underground loan shark syndicate operating out of the southern docks—the Moretti family.

“He owes forty thousand dollars to the Moretti brothers,” Ronan explained, his voice cold and analytical. “He’s been using your tips to pay the weekly interest on his debt so they wouldn't break his legs.”

Tears welled up in my eyes. “He told me the money was going toward rent and groceries. He told me if I didn't give him every dollar, the landlord would evict us onto the street.”

Ronan leaned forward, his eyes blazing with protective fury. “He was bleeding you dry, Sadie. And this morning, when he woke up and discovered your empty floorboard and realized you didn't come home from your shift, he went completely ballistic.”

My breath caught in my throat. “What did he do?”

“He trashed the apartment,” Ronan said. “Then he went straight to The Continental looking for you.”
