Chapter 9 - The Bellini Syndicate’s Ultimatum

By noon, the Black Pier was crawling with federal agents and Moretti enforcers.
The tribunal had not gone the way the Bellinis planned. With Elena Vance’s digital evidence and the Zurich bank records broadcast directly to the five family leaders, the syndicate had unanimously stripped the Bellinis of their rank, territory, and protection.
Vanessa Bellini and her father were arrested on federal RICO charges, attempted murder, and the premeditated poisoning of Sarah Moretti.
We returned to the main Chicago mansion that evening. The rain had washed the city clean, and the grand estate was once again quiet, bathed in the warm amber glow of the chandeliers.
I stood in Lily’s bedroom, helping her change into her pajamas. The red sweater was now folded neatly inside a glass shadowbox on her dresser, preserved forever alongside her mother’s photograph.
“Claire?” Lily asked as she climbed under the duvet.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“Are you going to be my nanny forever?”
I paused, smiling softly. “I’ll stay as long as your daddy needs me.”
Lily shook her head firmly. “Daddy doesn't just need you for work. I saw him looking at you today. He looks at you the way he used to look at Mommy when they were laughing.”
My cheeks flushed warm. “Go to sleep, little rascal.”
I kissed her forehead, turned on her daisy-shaped nightlight, and closed the door softly behind me.
As I walked down the grand marble staircase, Luca was waiting in the library. The heavy mahogany doors were open, and the fireplace crackled with fragrant cedar wood.
“Claire,” Luca called softly. “Come in for a moment.”
I entered the room. Luca had changed into a dark cashmere sweater and trousers. He poured two glasses of sparkling apple cider—knowing I didn't drink whiskey—and handed one to me.
“To Sarah’s justice,” Luca said, raising his glass.
“To Sarah,” I clinked my glass against his.
Luca took a sip, then set his glass on the desk. He walked over to the bookshelf, reached behind a leather-bound volume of Dante’s Inferno, and pulled out a small velvet box.
My breath caught in my throat.
“Sarah left Box 214 for me,” Luca said, his voice deep and resonant. “But she also left a final letter addressed only to me, hidden in her private diary.”
He opened the velvet box. Inside lay a breathtaking vintage platinum ring set with a flawless cushion-cut diamond, flanked by two tiny engraved daisies.

“What is that?” I whispered.
“Sarah’s heirloom,” Luca said, stepping closer until only inches separated us. “In her letter, she wrote: 'Luca, when the storm passes, you will meet someone who loves Lily not because of our wealth, but because of her soul. When you find her, give her this ring. She is the true mother of our house.'”
