Chapter 2 - The Voice That Survived Five Years

The drive to the downtown financial district was suffocatingly quiet.
Luca sat in the front seat of his armored SUV, staring through the windshield into the Chicago drizzle. I sat in the back with Lily, who clung to Sarah’s red sweater as if it were a shield. Vanessa sat on the opposite side of the back seat, her arms crossed tightly, her phone buzzing incessantly in her designer clutch.
“The guests are wondering where we are, Luca,” Vanessa pleaded, her voice tight with suppressed panic. “My father is hosting the syndicate leaders. You can’t just walk out on our alliance dinner.”
“They can wait,” Luca replied without turning around.
Union Federal Bank had closed hours ago, but the Moretti name moved mountains in this city. Within ten minutes of our arrival at the service alley, a terrified branch manager opened the heavy side door in his bathrobe and slippers, surrounded by three of Luca’s armed security details.
We descended into the sub-basement vault. The air down there was freezing, smelling of ancient steel, damp concrete, and old paper.
“Box 214,” Luca instructed the manager.
The manager’s hands shook as he inserted the master key into the bottom row. Luca stepped forward and inserted Sarah’s small brass key. With a heavy, satisfying mechanical click, the steel hatch swung open.
Inside lay a long, gunmetal-gray lockbox.
Luca carried the box to a small private examination room lined with soundproof felt. He placed it on the mahogany table. Lily gripped my fingers, her little hand icy cold.
“Open it, Daddy,” Lily whispered.
Luca lifted the lid. Inside lay three items: a thick sealed manila envelope, a photograph, and an old digital voice recorder with a piece of yellow tape labeled LISTEN FIRST.
Luca picked up the photograph. It showed Sarah five years ago, sitting at a quiet outdoor café in Geneva. Sitting opposite her was a striking woman with dark hair and a surgical scar along her jawline.
Vanessa caught a glimpse of the photo and gasped, stepping back against the vault wall.
Luca spun around. “You know her.”
“No,” Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking violently. “I’ve never seen that woman in my life.”
Luca flipped the photograph over. On the back, in Sarah’s neat cursive, were the words:
IF VANESSA BELLINI EVER ENTERS LILY’S LIFE, FIND THIS WOMAN BEFORE YOU MARRY HER. HER NAME IS ELENA VANCE.
Luca set the photo down. His hands were completely steady, but his eyes were burning with a dark, lethal fire. He picked up the digital recorder and pressed PLAY.
Static hissed through the tiny speaker. Then, a soft, familiar voice filled the room. Lily let out a small sob—it was Sarah.
“Luca... my love,” Sarah’s recorded voice began, sounding weak and breathless, punctuated by the hum of hospital machinery. “If you are listening to this, it means you have finally opened your heart again. And it means Lily is growing up. I prayed you wouldn't stay alone forever. But if the woman standing beside you tonight is Vanessa Bellini... you must stop.”
Vanessa lunged toward the table. “Turn it off! This is sick! She was hallucinating from the morphine!”
“Daniel,” Luca barked without looking up.
Daniel, Luca’s head of security, stepped in front of Vanessa, his massive frame blocking her path like an iron wall.
The recording continued:
“Vanessa Bellini was not just a social acquaintance, Luca. Six months before my diagnosis, her father approached me. The Bellinis were going bankrupt. They wanted the Moretti shipping ports. When I refused to persuade you to give them access, Vanessa came to my clinic. She threatened to orchestrate an 'accident' for Lily if I didn't step aside. I hired Elena Vance, a private investigator and former combat nurse, to document everything. Vanessa is not marrying you for love, Luca. She helped engineer my downfall. Check the offshore account under the name 'Daisy Holdings'. Everything is documented in this envelope. Protect our daughter. Do not let that monster raise our baby.”
The recording clicked off.
The vault went dead silent. The only sound was the faint hum of the fluorescent bulbs and the ragged sound of Vanessa’s breathing.
Luca slowly looked up from the table. The look on his face wasn’t merely anger; it was the chilling, merciless stillness of a predator that had just discovered a viper in its own nest.
“An accident for Lily?” Luca asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Vanessa’s facade cracked completely. “Luca, she was paranoid! She was losing her mind! My family has been loyal to you for decades!”
“Daniel,” Luca said, never taking his eyes off Vanessa.
“Yes, boss?”
“Strip her phone. Confiscate her keys. Take her to the holding suite in the lower estate.”
“You can’t do this!” Vanessa shrieked as Daniel and two guards seized her arms. “My father will tear your empire apart! The Bellinis won't stand for this humiliation!”
“Your father will answer for every dollar taken from Sarah,” Luca said coldly. “Get her out of my sight.”
Vanessa was dragged kicking and screaming down the corridor. Her manicured hands clawed at the walls, but the steel doors slammed shut, cutting off her cries.
Luca stood over the metal box. He opened the sealed envelope, revealing dozens of bank statements, wire transfers, and medical logs detailing unauthorized chemical compounds found in Sarah’s system weeks before her death.
Lily buried her face in my apron, trembling from head to toe. I wrapped my arms around the little girl, rubbing her back soothingly.
“It’s okay, Lily,” I whispered softly. “You’re safe now. Your daddy has you.”
Luca looked over at us. For the first time in the eleven months I had worked under his roof, the cold mafia kingpin looked completely shattered. His eyes met mine, lingering on how tightly Lily clung to me.
“Claire,” Luca said, his voice rough.
“Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
“Pack Lily’s bags. And pack your own.”
May you like
I blinked in confusion. “Sir?”
“The Bellinis will realize what happened within the hour,” Luca said, sliding the recorder and documents into his coat pocket. “Tonight, the city goes to war. I’m moving my daughter to the Evanston safehouse. And you are coming with us.”
