Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Fog

The basement of the Evanston fortress was equipped like a private trauma clinic. When Daniel and two guards carried Elena Vance through the reinforced security doors, the smell of gunpowder and rain filled the room.

Elena was pale, clutching a blood-soaked towel to her left shoulder. She had a deep gash along her forehead, but her sharp gray eyes were wide awake, scanning the room with the instincts of a seasoned survivor.

“Elena,” Luca said, stepping forward.

Elena looked up, letting out a ragged breath. “Luca... took you long enough. Sarah’s dead five years, and you finally found the key.”

“Sit her down,” I instructed Daniel, grabbing a pair of sterile gloves and surgical shears from the medical cabinet.

I moved on instinct, cutting away Elena's bloodied jacket and assessing the wound. The bullet had grazed her collarbone, tearing the flesh but missing the major artery.

“It’s a clean pass,” I told Luca as I applied antiseptic and began stitching the laceration. “She lost blood, but she’s stable.”

Elena winced as the needle entered her skin, but she didn’t cry out. She looked at me curiously. “Who’s the nurse?”

“Claire Dawson,” Luca answered. “She found the key in Sarah’s sweater.”

Elena gave a weak, appreciative nod. “Smart girl. Sarah always knew how to hide things where vanity wouldn’t look. Vanessa never cared about Lily’s clothes.”

“Tell me everything, Elena,” Luca demanded, his voice dangerously low. “The recording Sarah left... was it true? Did the Bellinis poison her?”

Elena closed her eyes for a moment, gathering her strength. “It wasn't a fast-acting poison, Luca. It was thallium. Odorless, tasteless. Mixed into the specialty herbal tea that Vanessa personally gifted Sarah every week during her recovery.”

Luca’s jaw clenched so hard I heard the bone click. “Why didn't you come to me five years ago?”

“Because Sarah forbade me,” Elena said, looking directly into Luca’s haunted eyes. “Five years ago, the Bellinis had infiltrated your inner circle. Sarah knew that if I came to you without hard proof, Vanessa’s father would trigger an all-out war while Lily was still an infant. Sarah traded her life to buy time. She made me hide the original laboratory analysis in an offshore server until the day Vanessa tried to take her place.”

Elena reached into her boot and pulled out a encrypted flash drive wrapped in waterproof plastic.

“The server keys,” Elena whispered, placing it in Luca's hand. “Every payment from the Bellini syndicate to the chemist in Zurich. Every wire transfer. And the signed confession from the maid Vanessa paid to slip the vials into Sarah’s tea.”

I finished tying the final suture on Elena’s shoulder. My hands were shaking. The sheer cruelty of it—watching a young mother die slowly while smiling in her face and pretending to be a friend—was beyond comprehension.

Luca stared at the drive. The air in the room grew heavy, suffocating with pure, unfiltered vengeance.

“Daniel,” Luca said softly.

“Yes, boss?”

“Call the five families. Call an emergency tribunal at the Black Pier for noon tomorrow.”

Daniel’s eyes widened. “A tribunal? Boss, that means invoking the Blood Code.”

“Vanessa Bellini murdered my wife,” Luca said, turning toward the stairs. “And she tried to steal my daughter. The Blood Code is the only law left.”
