Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Children’s Wing

My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. “Luca... I’m just a maid. I came here with nothing.”
“You came here with everything this house was missing,” Luca said, taking my hand. His fingers were warm, steady, and protective. “You gave Lily back her mother’s memory. You put your body between my daughter and a loaded gun. You brought warmth back into these cold halls.”
He looked deeply into my eyes. “I am not asking you to marry me tonight, Claire. I know we have scars to heal. But I am asking you to never leave this house again. Not as a servant. As my partner. As Lily’s family.”
Tears welled in my eyes, spilling over my cheeks. For years, I had felt invisible, working endless shifts to pay off debts, treated like an expendable ghost by women like Vanessa. But standing before Luca Moretti, I felt seen. I felt cherished.
“I’m not going anywhere, Luca,” I whispered.
A breathtaking smile spread across Luca’s face. He pulled me against his chest, dipping his head to press his lips softly against mine. The kiss was slow, tender, and filled with the promise of a future forged in fire and truth.
Suddenly, a little giggle came from the library doorway.
We turned to see Lily peeking through the doors, wearing her fuzzy slippers and grinning from ear to ear.
“I knew it!” Lily cheered, clapping her hands. “I knew Claire was going to stay!”
Luca laughed—a rich, booming sound that filled the grand room with pure joy—and reached out his arm. “Come here, troublemaker.”
Lily ran across the rug and leaped into her father’s arms. Luca held Lily with one arm and pulled me close with the other, bringing our foreheads together in a circle of warmth and laughter.

Outside the tall mansion windows, the Chicago skyline glittered under the clear night sky. The shadows of the past had finally been burned away by the truth.
In the corner of the dresser upstairs, beneath the soft glow of the nightlight, the embroidered daisy on Sarah’s red sweater rested peacefully, guarding the home she had saved from beyond the grave.
