Chapter 15 - A Daisy in Full Bloom

One year later.

The morning sun rose over the rolling hills of our countryside estate outside Florence, Italy, where we spent our summers away from the busy Chicago corporate headquarters.

I sat on the wide stone terrace overlooking the olive groves and blooming sunflower fields, holding a warm cup of herbal tea.

From the lawn below, the sounds of laughter drifted up through the morning air.

Luca was out on the grass, wearing linen pants and rolled-up sleeves, playing soccer with Lily. Lily was laughing hysterically as she skillfully dribbled the ball past her father, kicking it into the small pop-up goal set between two cypress trees.

“Goal!” Lily cheered, throwing her arms in the air. “I beat the great Luca Moretti three to two!”

“That was a lucky bounce!” Luca laughed, scooping his daughter up into the air and spinning her around as she shrieked with delight.

Luca set Lily down, ruffled her hair, and pointed up toward the terrace. “Go wash up for breakfast, champion. Claire made pancakes.”

“With chocolate chips?” Lily asked eagerly.

“Double chocolate chips,” Luca promised with a wink.

Lily bolted toward the villa doors, shouting a cheerful “Grazie!” in her developing Italian.

Luca walked up the stone steps toward the terrace, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with a grin. He walked straight behind my chair, leaning down to wrap his strong arms around my shoulders and resting his chin against my cheek.

“Good morning, my love,” Luca murmured, kissing my neck softly.

“Good morning, soccer champion,” I teased, tilting my head back to look at him.

Luca laughed, sitting down in the wicker chair beside me and taking my hand into his. His thumb rubbed gently over the platinum wedding band and the daisy ring that sparkled under the golden Tuscan sun.

He looked out over the peaceful valley, taking a deep, contented breath.

“Five years ago,” Luca said softly, “I thought this estate was just an empty monument. I never believed it could feel like this.”

“Like what?” I asked, smiling.

“Like a real family,” Luca replied, turning to look at me with eyes filled with overwhelming warmth. “Like peace.”

I reached out and placed his hand gently over my stomach.

Luca froze.

His eyes slowly moved down to his hand, then back up to my face, his breath catching in his throat. “Claire...?”

“Lily is going to be a big sister in seven months,” I whispered, tears of joy sparkling in my eyes.

Luca stared at me for a heartbeat, rendered completely speechless. Then, a radiant, triumphant smile broke across his face. He pulled me up from the chair and into his arms, lifting me off the ground and kissing me with a tenderness that made my whole body tingle.

“A baby...” Luca breathed against my lips, his voice thick with emotion as he gently pressed his forehead against mine. “Another little miracle in our house.”

“Another daisy in our garden,” I smiled, resting my hands against his chest.

From inside the house, Lily’s voice called out: “Claire! Daddy! The pancakes are ready!”

Luca took my hand, intertwining our fingers tightly as we walked toward the open French doors together.

The red sweater remained preserved in Chicago, a testament to a mother’s enduring love and a warning that had saved a family from ruin. But here, under the bright, warm sun, our story was no longer about shadows, secrets, or revenge.

It was about love.

It was about family.
