Chapter 11 - The Trap at the Black Pier

Three months had passed since the night the Bellini syndicate crumbled.
The city had begun to heal, and so had our home. The oppressive tension that once choked the Moretti estate was gone, replaced by the sounds of Lily practicing piano in the sunlit parlor, the scent of freshly baked vanilla cookies, and the steady, comforting presence of a family finding its footing.
I was no longer wearing the gray uniform of a service maid. Luca had officially appointed me as the Executive Director of the Sarah Moretti Memorial Foundation—a charitable trust dedicated to supporting low-income pediatric clinics across Illinois. My mother’s medical debts were entirely paid off, and her home in Indiana had been fully renovated.
Yet, despite our newfound peace, the legal aftermath of the Bellini trial was reaching its dramatic climax.
I sat in the front row of the federal courtroom beside Luca. He wore a tailored navy three-piece suit, his arm resting protectively along the back of my chair. Lily sat between us, holding my hand tightly.
Behind the defense table sat Vanessa Bellini, stripped of her designer wardrobe and jewels, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit. Her hair was stringy, her face hollow and pale. Her father, Don Bellini, sat beside her in handcuffs, staring down at the mahogany table in defeated silence.
The federal prosecutor stepped forward, holding up a clear evidence bag containing the digital voice recorder and the laboratory reports certified by Zurich medical examiners.
“Your Honor,” the prosecutor declared, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom. “The evidence is incontrovertible. For over six months, the defendants systematically administered lethal doses of thallium to Sarah Moretti to seize control of the Moretti maritime logistics network. When their plot was exposed by the deceased's private safeguards, they orchestrated an armed assault on a minor child.”
The judge adjusted her glasses, her expression stern and unforgiving. “Does the defense have any closing statements?”
Vanessa’s lawyer slowly stood up, looking at his client, and shook his head. “No, Your Honor. The defense rests.”
Vanessa suddenly bolted to her feet, her chains rattling violently against the table. “This is a conspiracy! Luca fabricated the files! That little servant girl stole Sarah’s clothes to frame me!”
“Silence in the court!” the judge slammed her gavel down with thunderous force. “The defendant will be seated immediately, or she will be removed!”
Two federal marshals grabbed Vanessa’s shoulders, forcing her back into her chair.
The judge looked down at the verdict papers. “On the charges of racketeering, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and aggravated kidnapping... this court finds the defendants, Vanessa Bellini and Arthur Bellini, guilty on all counts.”
The courtroom erupted into a murmur of gasps and whispers.
“Sentencing will proceed immediately,” the judge continued, her voice cold as ice. “You are both sentenced to life imprisonment at the ADX Florence maximum-security facility, without the possibility of parole.”
Vanessa let out a hollow, strangled wail as the marshals cuffed her hands behind her back and began dragging her toward the holding cells. As she passed our row, her bloodshot eyes locked onto mine.
“You stole my life, Claire!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing down the marble hallway. “You were just a maid! You’re nothing!”
I didn’t flinch. I held Lily closer to my side and looked straight into Vanessa’s wild, hateful eyes.

“I didn't steal your life, Vanessa,” I said softly, yet clearly enough for the entire room to hear. “You threw yours away the day you hurt a mother and her child.”
The heavy steel doors slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate forever.
