Chapter 9 - The Gala of Knives and Velvet

By mid-February, the tensions between the Grimm Empire and the Vane Syndicate had reached a boiling point. Yet in the upper echelons of high society, wars were fought not only with bullets in dark alleys, but with smiles and champagne flutes under crystal chandeliers.

The annual Winter Benefactors Gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel was the most prestigious social event of the year. Every billionaire, politician, and crime boss in the state was required to attend.

When Nicholas Grimm walked down the grand marble staircase of the hotel’s ballroom, the entire room went silent.

Nicholas looked devastatingly powerful in a custom black tuxedo, his broad shoulders and commanding height dominating the space. But it was the woman on his arm that turned every head in the room.

Emily was breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk evening gown that hugged her slender figure, cascading down to the floor in elegant folds. Her dark hair was swept up in an intricate, sophisticated updo, highlighting her graceful neck and delicate collarbones. Around her throat rested a dazzling diamond choker—a personal gift from Nicholas that afternoon.

"Breathe, Emily," Nicholas murmured softly near her ear, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back. "You look more regal than anyone in this room."

Emily offered a nervous yet radiant smile. "I'm just not used to so many eyes on me, Nicholas."

"Get used to it," he replied, a hint of dark pride in his voice. "When you walk with the king, the world has no choice but to look."

As they moved toward the VIP lounge, the crowd parted like the Red Sea. Politicians bowed their heads, and rival business magnates stepped forward to offer cautious handshakes. Emily navigated the conversations with effortless grace, recalling names, dates, and financial figures Nicholas had taught her over the past month.

Suddenly, the air in the lounge grew thick and cold.

A tall, gaunt man with slicked-back silver hair, cold predatory eyes, and a sharp, cruel sneer approached their table. He was flanked by three heavily armed bodyguards in matching grey suits.

Lucian Vane.

"Nicholas," Lucian purred, his voice sounding like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "I see you managed to pry yourself away from your fortress in the hills."

Nicholas didn't move an inch. He took a slow sip of his bourbon, his grey eyes locking onto Lucian with lethal calm. "Lucian. I'm surprised you showed your face tonight. I assumed you would be busy counting the ashes of your southern warehouses."

Lucian’s sneer tightened into an ugly snarl, but he forced a dry laugh. His gaze flickered away from Nicholas and landed directly on Emily, his eyes raking over her with oily, predatory interest.

"And who is this exquisite little flower?" Lucian stepped closer, extending a pale, manicured hand toward Emily. "I wasn't aware Nicholas Grimm kept pets."

Before Emily could react, Nicholas stepped between them, his towering frame completely shielding her from Lucian’s view.

The atmosphere in the VIP lounge instantly turned arctic. Several guests backed away in panic, sensing the imminent explosion of violence.

"Touch her," Nicholas said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and menacing that the bodyguards behind Lucian reached nervously for their weapons, "and I will tear your empire down piece by piece, kill every man who bears your name, and bury you under the docks."

Lucian’s hand froze in mid-air. He looked into Nicholas’s unyielding, murderous eyes and realized, with a sudden jolt of terror, that Nicholas was not making a threat—he was stating an absolute, immutable fact.

Lucian slowly pulled his hand back, forcing a sneering grin to save face. "Always so dramatic, Nicholas. Enjoy your evening... while you still have an empire to run."

As Lucian turned and walked away into the crowd, Emily let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.

Nicholas turned to her, his large hands gently cupping her face, his expression transformed by an intensity of emotion that made her heart race.

"Are you alright?" he asked softly.

May you like

"I'm alright," Emily whispered, leaning into the warmth of his touch. "Because you're here."

Nicholas looked down at her, the dark walls around his guarded heart crumbling entirely. In that crowded, dangerous ballroom, surrounded by enemies and vipers, he knew with absolute certainty that this girl was no longer just an assistant—she was the center of his universe.
