Chapter 7 - A Second Chance Under the Master’s Direct Watch

The library was a two-story masterpiece of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, rich mahogany paneling, and the faint, intoxicating scent of old paper, leather, and pipe tobacco. A massive stone fireplace roared at the far end of the room, casting warm shadows over a heavy executive desk.
Nicholas Grimm sat behind the desk, reviewing a stack of financial documents. He wore a crisp, tailored black turtleneck and charcoal trousers, looking less like a mafia boss and more like a dark, regal scholar.
When Emily entered, he immediately set his gold pen down and stood up.
"Emily," he said, his deep voice filling the quiet room. "Come in. Please, sit."
Emily walked tentatively across the thick wool rug and took a seat in the plush leather armchair opposite his desk. She kept her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her heart fluttering with nervous energy. "Good morning, Mr. Grimm."
Nicholas studied her for a moment, his grey eyes assessing the color in her cheeks and the light returning to her hazel eyes. A subtle look of satisfaction crossed his sculpted features.
"You look significantly better than you did twelve hours ago," he noted, leaning back against his desk. "How are your hands?"
"Much better, sir. Dr. Vance took wonderful care of me. I... I don't know how to thank you for saving my life."
"You don't need to thank me for doing what any decent man should have done," Nicholas replied smoothly. He folded his arms across his chest. "I called you here to discuss your future at this estate."
Emily’s stomach tightened. The old fear crept back into her throat. "Are you... are you letting me go, sir? I understand if you don't want me here after what happened with the vase—"
"Emily," Nicholas interrupted, his tone firm yet surprisingly gentle. "You are not being fired. And you will never scrub another floor in this mansion again."
Emily looked up in confusion. "I won't?"
"No," Nicholas said, reaching for a leather-bound folder on his desk. "Richard Caldwell was a parasite who abused his authority and stole from my household. In his absence, Mrs. Gable has been promoted to head of domestic operations. However, I find myself in need of a personal administrative assistant."
Emily blinked, wondering if she had misheard him. "An assistant? For you, sir?"
"Someone to manage my private correspondence, organize my personal schedule, catalog my private art collection, and travel with me when I conduct business in the city," Nicholas explained, his piercing gaze never leaving her face. "It requires intelligence, discretion, and absolute loyalty. Based on the reports I received from the kitchen staff about your work ethic before Caldwell targeted you, you possess all three."
"Mr. Grimm, I... I don't have a college degree," Emily said honestly, her cheeks flushing pink. "I barely finished high school before my parents died. I don't know if I'm qualified to assist someone like you."
Nicholas took a step closer, towering over her chair, his presence commanding yet strangely comforting.
"Degrees can be bought, Emily. Character cannot," Nicholas said quietly. "You took the blame for an accident, offered your own livelihood to fix it, and endured freezing cold rather than compromise your integrity. That makes you more qualified than half the executives on my payroll."
He opened the folder and placed a contract before her.
"The salary is seventy-five thousand dollars a year, full health benefits, private quarters in the east wing, and an educational stipend if you wish to pursue your studies online. In return, I demand only one thing."
Emily looked up at him, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What is that, sir?"
"Your absolute trust," Nicholas said softly, his voice dropping into an intimate, intense timbre. "Whatever happens in my world, whatever shadows you see, you come to me. I protect what belongs to me, Emily. Always."
Looking into those steady, fierce grey eyes, Emily felt something shift inside her chest—a wall of fear crumbling away, replaced by a profound, unshakeable sense of safety.
She picked up the gold pen resting on the desk.

"I accept, Mr. Grimm," she whispered.
Nicholas watched as she signed her name on the dotted line. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of his lips—a smile that promised the entire world that this girl was now under the protection of the king.
