Chapter 10 - Secrets of an Orphan’s Heritage

Two days after the gala, the winter sun broke through the clouds, melting the remaining ice from the estate’s grand terraces.
Emily sat in Nicholas’s private archive room in the basement of the mansion, organizing the historical deeds and family records that dated back to the late nineteenth century. Nicholas had entrusted her with the master ledger, giving her full clearance to every secret the Grimm family possessed.
As she cataloged a locked metal box labeled Northern Rail & Maritime Acquisitions - 2010, a yellowed legal document caught her eye.
She pulled the parchment from the sleeve and unfolded it carefully.
Her breath caught in her throat.
At the top of the deed, stamped with the official seal of the state maritime commission, was the name of a private logistics company: Turner Cargo & Transport Services.
Beneath it were the signatures of the original board members. In bold, familiar cursive at the bottom of the page was the name: David Turner.
My father, Emily thought, her hands trembling violently as she read through the legal addendums.
According to the documents, David Turner had owned forty percent of the northern shipping docks twelve years ago. But attached to the back of the deed was a brutal foreclosure and hostile takeover filing, signed by none other than Lucian Vane.
The documents detailed how the Vane Syndicate had sabotaged David Turner’s cargo ships, framed him for financial fraud, and forced him into bankruptcy, stripping the Turner family of their wealth and driving them into poverty years before the fatal car crash that took his life.
"Emily?"
Nicholas’s deep voice echoed from the doorway of the archive room. He walked down the stone stairs, his eyes instantly tracking the shock and tears on her pale face.
He crossed the room in three strides, kneeling beside her chair. "What is it? What happened?"
Emily looked down at the documents, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "My father... he wasn't just a truck driver. He owned the northern docks. Lucian Vane destroyed him, Nicholas. Vane took everything from my family and left us with nothing."
Nicholas looked at the papers in her lap. A look of quiet, profound sorrow settled over his features.
"I know," Nicholas said softly.
Emily’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with hurt and confusion. "You knew? You knew who my father was?"
"Not when I found you in the snow," Nicholas explained gently, taking her trembling hands in his. "I only learned the truth two weeks ago when Roman ran a deep background check on Caldwell's past associates. Caldwell was on Lucian Vane's payroll ten years ago. He was the insider who helped Vane forge your father's signature on those foreclosure deeds."
Emily gasped, the pieces of the horrifying puzzle snapping into place. "Caldwell... he recognized my last name when I applied for the maid position."
"Yes," Nicholas said, his jaw tightening with dark fury. "He knew who you were. He spent three months tormenting you, trying to break your spirit and drive you away before you discovered the truth about your family’s stolen legacy. And when you broke the vase, he used it as an excuse to murder you in the cold."
Fresh tears streamed down Emily’s cheeks, a mixture of profound grief for her parents and blazing anger at the men who had ruined them.
Nicholas reached out, his thumb gently wiping the tears from her face. His grey eyes burned with an unyielding, protective fire.

"Your father was an honorable man, Emily," Nicholas said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "He refused to let the syndicates smuggle weapons through his docks, which is why Vane destroyed him. But I swear to you, on my life and everything I own... Lucian Vane will pay for every tear you and your family have shed. The northern docks will be returned to you. Every single inch."
Emily looked into Nicholas’s eyes, seeing not a ruthless mobster, but a fierce, noble guardian who was ready to wage war for her justice. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder, letting him hold her as the shadows of her past were finally brought into the light.
