Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of Richard Caldwell

The howling gale outside seemed to scream louder as the double front doors of the Grimm estate were thrown open once more.

Two burly security guards dragged Richard Caldwell through the foyer, his polished shoes scuffing uselessly against the marble. His immaculate tuxedo vest was torn, his hair was disheveled, and pure, unadulterated terror leaked from his wide, bloodshot eyes.

"Mr. Grimm! Please! You can't do this!" Richard shrieked, his voice echoing frantically down the grand hallway. "It's a blizzard! I'll die out there! It's murder! Roman, please, we've known each other for five years!"

Roman walked behind them, carrying a manila folder filled with freshly printed bank statements and audit sheets retrieved from Richard's private safe.

"Five years of you skimming ten percent off the staff payroll and pocketing the maintenance funds," Roman said coldly, stopping at the threshold of the open doorway. "You stole over four hundred thousand dollars from Nicholas Grimm, Caldwell. In our world, that usually earns you a six-foot hole in the pine barrens. You should consider yourself lucky the boss is feeling charitable on Christmas Eve."

"Charitable?!" Richard wailed as the arctic wind slammed into his chest, instantly freezing the sweat on his skin. "I don't have a coat! I don't have my phone! How am I supposed to reach the highway?"

"The same way Emily Turner was supposed to," Roman replied, his voice devoid of pity. "On foot. In the snow. Let's see how far your arrogance carries you."

With a nod from Roman, the two guards shoved Richard forward. He stumbled down the stone steps of the portico, losing his balance and crashing face-first into the waist-deep drift at the bottom.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him.

The deadbolt clicked.

Richard scrambled to his feet, spitting freezing slush from his mouth. The cold was a physical monster, tearing through his thin cotton shirt and wool trousers within seconds. The wind whipped snow into his eyes, blinding him, while the roar of the trees sounded like the mocking laughter of demons.

"Open the door!" Richard screamed, pounding his soft, manicured hands against the massive oak panels. "Open the damn door!"

No one answered. The warm yellow light glowing behind the leaded glass windows felt a million miles away.

Panic seized his chest, constricting his lungs until he couldn't draw a full breath. The temperature was dropping by the minute. He looked down the winding, pitch-black driveway where the snow was piling higher and higher.

He had no choice. He had to run.

Richard turned and began trudging frantically through the snow, his leather loafers slipping and sliding on the buried ice. Within fifty yards, the numbness settled into his toes. Within a hundred yards, his fingers felt like frozen brittle wood. Every step was an agony of exhaustion, his chest burning as he inhaled the freezing gale.

He fell once. Twice. Three times.

Each time he pushed himself up, he remembered the cold, dismissive words he had spoken to Emily Turner only two hours earlier: Not my concern. You should have thought about that before.

Now, the irony tasted like bitter ash in his mouth.

After what felt like hours of agonizing crawling through the drifts, his shivering body gave out near the wrought-iron exterior gates. His knees hit the frozen gravel beneath the snow, and he collapsed onto his side, weeping hysterically into the white abyss.

Suddenly, the harsh glare of headlights cut through the blizzard.

A heavy snowplow from the county highway department came rumbling down the public road, its flashing amber lights illuminating the frozen ditch. The driver slammed on his brakes, spotting the half-frozen man waving his arms frantically from the roadside.

Richard Caldwell would survive the night—barely.

He would spend the next two weeks in the county hospital's intensive care burn unit, losing three toes to severe frostbite. And when he was finally discharged, he would find his bank accounts frozen, his assets seized by Grimm Holdings, and two plainclothes detectives waiting to arrest him for grand larceny and corporate embezzlement.

His life of luxury, prestige, and power was officially over.

Inside the warm, secure fortress of the master suite upstairs, Emily Turner slept peacefully beneath the silk blankets, completely unaware that the man who had cast her into the dark had just been erased from her world forever.
