Chapter 4 - A Dinner Interrupted and the Confrontation with the Cruel Butler

Downstairs in the great banquet hall, the atmosphere was a symphony of high society decadence and unspoken criminal terror.

Thirty of the city’s most influential figures sat along the forty-foot banquet table crafted from dark English walnut. Among them were corrupt city councilmen, high-ranking port authorities, and the ruthless lieutenants of the Grimm syndicate. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting brilliant light across platters of roast venison, truffled potatoes, and vintage French champagne.

At the head of the serving line stood Richard Caldwell, immaculate in his tuxedo vest and polished silver name tag.

He moved with the smug arrogance of a man who believed he was indispensable. He directed the terrified footmen with sharp snaps of his fingers, relishing the prestige of orchestrating the most exclusive event of the winter season.

"More wine for Commissioner Vance," Richard whispered harshly to a young server. "And keep your elbows tucked in. If you disgrace me tonight, you will join that useless little Turner girl in the unemployment line."

The server paled and hurried away.

Richard smiled to himself, taking a sip of water from a crystal goblet behind the serving screen. He had already spun the narrative in his head: the clumsy orphan girl had stolen silver cutlery, panicked when confronted, and fled into the night of her own accord. If she froze to death on the highway, it was her own fault. The city police would never dare question Nicholas Grimm’s head of household.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the banquet hall swung open with a resounding thud.

The low murmur of laughter and conversation died instantly. The guests fell into dead silence, their forks freezing halfway to their mouths.

Nicholas Grimm entered the room.

He was not dressed in the formal dinner tuxedo expected for Christmas Eve. He wore dark trousers and a crisp white shirt, the top two buttons undone, his sleeves rolled up to the elbows. His expression was completely unreadable, a terrifying mask of calm authority that sent an electric wave of tension through the hall.

Behind him walked Roman, his hand resting openly on the tactical holster at his hip.

"Nicholas, my boy!" Councilman Sterling boomed, raising a glass of scotch from the center of the table. "We were beginning to think the blizzard had trapped you in the city! Magnificent spread you have here tonight. Your house manager has outdone himself!"

Richard Caldwell stepped forward immediately, bowing his head with practiced, obsequious deference.

"Welcome home, Mr. Grimm," Richard said smoothly, his voice dripping with false humility. "Dinner has just been served. We have prepared the 1982 Chateau Margaux per your instructions. I have ensured every detail of your estate is running with absolute, flawless precision."

Nicholas didn't look at the councilman. He didn't look at the food. His grey eyes locked squarely onto Richard Caldwell.

He walked slowly down the length of the long table, the rhythmic tap of his boots echoing across the room. Every guest watched him, sensing the lethal energy radiating from their host.

Nicholas stopped two feet from Richard.

"Flawless precision, Richard?" Nicholas asked, his tone deceptively mild.

"Always, sir," Richard beamed, straightening his posture. "I take pride in maintaining the highest standards of the Grimm family name. I tolerate no incompetence, no laziness, and no liabilities."

"Is that so?" Nicholas tilted his head. "And what do you do with... liabilities, Richard?"

Richard’s smile faltered slightly, a prickle of unease creeping up the back of his neck under Nicholas’s unblinking stare. "I... I remove them, sir. As any faithful manager should."

Nicholas reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object. He tossed it onto the polished tablecloth in front of Richard with a sharp clack.

It was a shard of blue-and-white porcelain, stained with a dark, dried drop of blood.

Richard’s face drained of all color. The smug arrogance vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, sickening terror that made his knees tremble.

"Do you know what this is, Richard?" Nicholas asked quietly.

"I... Mr. Grimm, I can explain—"

"I asked if you knew what it was," Nicholas interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating through the silent hall like thunder before a strike.

"It's... it's a piece of the Ming-style urn from the foyer, sir," Richard stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "The junior maid, Emily... she was utterly reckless. She destroyed your grandfather's heirloom! She panicked and ran out into the storm before I could stop her! I tried to call her back, but—"

Crack!

Nicholas’s left hand shot out like a striking viper, wrapping around Richard’s throat with bone-crushing force. With a single, explosive motion, Nicholas lifted the grown man off the floor and slammed him backward against the wood-paneled wall.

Goblets shattered on the floor. Several syndicate bosses reached for their jackets before Roman raised a hand, signaling them to stay seated. No one dared intervene.

Richard gasped for air, his hands clawing desperately at Nicholas’s iron grip, his feet dangling six inches above the Persian rug.

"Do not lie to me in my own house," Nicholas whispered, stepping closer until his face was inches from Richard’s bulging eyes. "You stripped a nineteen-year-old girl of her coat. You threw her into a negative twenty-degree blizzard. You locked the doors and left her to freeze to death on my driveway."

"P-Please..." Richard choked out, his face turning a deep, suffocating purple. "She... she was... just a maid..."

"She was under my roof," Nicholas snarled, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, primal rage that silenced every beating heart in the room. "And under my roof, my word is the only law that matters. You don't throw away human beings like trash, Caldwell. Not on my land. Not while I draw breath."

Nicholas released his grip.

Richard crumpled to the floor in a pathetic heap, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat.

"Roman," Nicholas commanded, turning his back on the disgraced butler.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Strip him of his keys, his phone, and his wallet. Search his quarters for the estate ledger. I want every cent he has embezzled from this household over the last five years calculated by midnight."

"And then, sir?" Roman asked, stepping forward with two armed guards.

Nicholas walked back to the head of the banquet table and picked up a crystal tumbler of whiskey. He took a slow, deliberate sip before looking down at the shivering man crawling on the floor.

"And then," Nicholas said with cold finality, "give him the exact same treatment he gave Emily Turner. Throw him out the front gate into the blizzard with nothing but the clothes on his back. Let's see if his pedigree keeps him warm."
