Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Grand Hallway

Morning brought a serene, blinding stillness to the Grimm estate.
The blizzard had finally blown out to sea just before dawn, leaving the sprawling three-hundred-acre estate blanketed under four feet of pristine, glistening snow. Sunlight poured through the soaring arched windows of the master suite, casting brilliant beams of gold across the Persian rugs and antique furnishings.
Emily woke slowly, the lingering fog of exhaustion clearing from her mind.
She sat up in the massive bed, gasping softly as she looked around the lavish room. The reality of where she was crashed over her: she was in Nicholas Grimm’s private bedroom.
She looked down at her hands. The bandages were clean and neatly taped. The sharp, agonizing burning in her skin had softened into a dull, manageable ache. On the mahogany nightstand beside the bed rested a fresh glass of orange juice, a plate of warm croissants drizzled with honey, and a brand-new set of soft cashmere loungewear neatly folded.
Beside the clothes lay a small, handwritten note on heavy cream cardstock:
Eat. Dress. When you are ready, Mrs. Gable will show you to my study. Do not be afraid. You are safe here. — N.G.
Emily’s heart fluttered in a strange, unfamiliar rhythm. For three years, since the car accident that took both of her parents, her life had been a relentless battle for survival. She had known only cold landlords, cruel bosses, and the constant fear of eviction. Kindness was a currency no one had ever spent on her.
Yet here, in the home of the city's most feared kingpin, she had been wrapped in warmth and protected from death.
She ate the breakfast eagerly, the rich, buttery pastries bringing color back to her cheeks. She slipped into the soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater and matching trousers, marveling at how perfectly they fit her petite frame.
When she opened the master suite doors, an elderly woman with kind, crinkled eyes and a crisp housekeeper's uniform was waiting in the corridor.
"Good morning, child," the woman said warmly, offering a gentle smile. "I'm Mrs. Gable, the senior head of domestic staff. How are you feeling?"
"Much better, ma'am," Emily said quietly, stepping into the hall. "Thank you. Is... is Mr. Grimm really expecting me?"
"He has been waiting for you in the west wing library since eight o'clock," Mrs. Gable replied, leading Emily down the grand corridor lined with oil paintings and marble busts.
As they walked past the grand staircase, Emily stopped dead in her tracks.
The foyer below was spotless. Every piece of broken blue-and-white porcelain had been cleared away. The floor gleamed with fresh polish, and a magnificent new floral arrangement of white lilies and silver pine stood proudly on the console table.
Several maids and footmen were bustling quietly through the hall. When they caught sight of Emily standing on the balcony, they stopped and bowed their heads respectfully.
"Where is Mr. Caldwell?" Emily whispered to Mrs. Gable.
Mrs. Gable’s face hardened slightly, though her eyes remained gentle. "Mr. Caldwell no longer works for this estate, my dear. In fact, he will never work in this state again. Mr. Grimm made sure of that last night."
Emily swallowed hard. The whispers she had heard among the staff during her first month returned to her mind: Nicholas Grimm is ruthless to his enemies, but fiercely loyal to those under his protection.
They reached the heavy, brass-studded double doors of the library. Mrs. Gable gave two soft knocks, pushed the door open, and gestured for Emily to enter.

"Go on, child. He doesn't bite... unless you give him a reason to."
Emily took a deep breath, gathered her courage, and stepped across the threshold into the lion's den.
