Chapter 9 - The Silent Witness

Emma stood up.
The chatter in the ballroom died down instantly. Hundreds of eyes locked onto the young woman in the emerald gown standing at the side of Chicago’s most feared man.
Emma did not flinch. She picked up the microphone stationed at the center of the table. Her voice, clear, melodic, and resonant, echoed through the ballroom speakers with absolute authority.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Emma began, her tone ringing with calm precision. "Mr. Adrian Voss has asked me to deliver a brief announcement regarding the leadership of Voss Holdings and the future of Chicago’s commercial waterfront."
At the VIP dais, Councilman Sterling stood up abruptly. "Now see here! This is a private charity dinner, not a corporate press conference! Sit down, young lady!"
Emma didn't even look at Sterling. She continued, her voice cutting through the hall like a razor:
"At 2:30 a.m. yesterday, Mr. Nolan Pierce was relieved of his duties following the discovery of multi-million-dollar treason, illegal arms trafficking, and conspiracy to commit murder in collusion with Councilman Thomas Sterling and Mr. Marco Moretti."
A collective gasp swept through the four hundred guests. Several high-profile politicians spilled their drinks.
"That’s a lie!" Marco roared, standing up and reaching beneath his tuxedo jacket. "Security! Get this lunatic out of here!"
Before Marco could draw his weapon, the ballroom's massive projection screens flickered to life.
Adrian had uploaded the contents of the black drive directly into the hotel’s multimedia system.
On the massive twenty-foot screens appeared high-definition audio recordings, bank routing slips, and surveillance photos showing Nolan Pierce handing over blueprints of the Voss distribution network to Marco Moretti in a private backroom at Frank Moran’s diner.
Next flashed documents showing Councilman Sterling receiving a wire transfer of two million dollars into a Panamanian shell company.
The entire ballroom erupted into chaos. Journalists scrambled for their cameras. Federal prosecutors sitting at nearby tables stood up, pulling out their phones to summon federal marshals.
Marco Moretti, his face crimson with rage and desperation, drew a concealed ceramic pistol and aimed it straight at Emma’s chest.
"Die, you bitch!" Marco screamed.
Emma didn't have time to move. But Adrian did.
Without hearing the shout, Adrian had tracked Marco’s shoulder twitch. In a fraction of a second, Adrian lunged across the table. His hand clamped down over the barrel of Marco’s gun, wrenching the weapon upward just as a shot cracked through the ceiling, shattering a crystal chandelier.
With terrifying speed and brutal efficiency, Adrian drove his elbow into Marco’s jaw, sending the mafia prince crashing through the champagne pyramid in an explosion of glass and foam.
Adrian stood over Marco’s bleeding, unconscious body. He dusted off his satin lapel, not a single hair out of place.

He looked around the stunned, silent ballroom.
Then Adrian turned to Emma, extended his hand, and gently guided her away from the chaos as the sirens of arriving federal and state police wailed in the distance.
