Chapter 4 - The Manor of Shadows

By 4:30 a.m., the Lake Forest estate had transformed into a silent fortress under lockdown.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, rain began to fall in heavy sheets, pattering against the armored glass. Emma stood on the second-floor balcony of the west wing, looking out over the manicured grounds where armed security patrols moved with disciplined precision.

The silver-haired woman she had met earlier—whose name was Martha, the estate’s head housekeeper and one of the few staff members who had known Adrian since childhood—walked into the suite carrying a tray of hot tea and fresh pastries.

"Drink something warm, child," Martha said softly, her voice carrying a comforting Scottish brogue. "You’ve had a night that would break most men in half."

Emma turned, wrapping her arms around herself. She had changed out of the elegant black evening dress and into a soft cashmere sweater and linen pants that Martha had provided. "Martha... what kind of man is Mr. Voss?"

Martha set the tray on the coffee table and gave a faint, sad smile. "He’s a man who has lived in a prison of silence and betrayal for six long years. People in this city call him a monster because he doesn't speak to the press and he doesn't show mercy to those who betray him. But Adrian took over this empire only to protect what his father built after the Morettis tried to wipe them out."

Martha stepped closer, her eyes gleaming with genuine gratitude. "For three years, Nolan Pierce kept Adrian isolated. Nolan fired honest interpreters, claiming they were security risks. He made himself Adrian’s voice to the world. And tonight, you broke that cage."

Before Emma could respond, a soft knock sounded at the open door.

Adrian stood in the doorway. He had changed into a simple dark sweater and trousers. Without the formal suit, he looked less like an untouchable don and more like a tired, intensely focused man carrying the weight of a kingdom on his shoulders.

Martha bowed her head respectfully and slipped out of the room, gently pulling the door shut behind her.

Adrian walked over to the table, glanced at the untouched tea, and signed:

You cannot sleep?

Emma sat on the sofa and signed back:

My mind is spinning. Everything happened too fast.

Adrian sat in the armchair opposite her. He pulled a small tablet from his pocket and tapped the screen before turning it toward her.

On the screen was a live video feed from a private hospital suite. Emma’s mother, Evelyn Brooks, was resting peacefully in an advanced medical bed, surrounded by state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and two attentive private nurses. Outside the hospital room door stood two imposing men in sharp suits.

Emma felt a lump form in her throat. "Mom..." she whispered.

Adrian signed:

She arrived safely thirty minutes ago. The chief of neurology has already reviewed her chart. Her treatments are paid for the next ten years. No one from Moran's circle or the Moretti syndicate can touch her.

Emma looked up from the screen. Her eyes shimmered with tears of overwhelming relief. For five years, she had carried the crushing terror of losing her mother to unpaid medical debts. Every day had been a desperate calculation of survival. In one single night, this silent man had lifted that impossible burden from her shoulders.

Emma signed, her fingers trembling with emotion:

I don't know how to repay you for this.

Adrian leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers with magnetic intensity. He signed slowly:

You don't repay a debt that isn't yours. You saved my empire from being hijacked from within. But tomorrow, the war begins. Nolan's conspirators will realize his plan failed. I need you by my side at the board meetings and at the summit.

As your interpreter? Emma asked.

May you like

Adrian’s lips curved into the faintest, rarest smile—a glimpse of breathtaking warmth beneath the cold stone facade.

Not just my interpreter, he signed. As my eyes, my ears, and my partner.
