Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of Frank Moran

By 3:00 a.m., the aftermath of the Gala had decimated the Moretti syndicate.

Federal agents, armed with the undeniable digital evidence Adrian provided, executed over thirty arrest warrants across the city. Councilman Sterling was handcuffed on live television outside the Drake Hotel. Marco Moretti was taken into custody under armed guard at Cook County Hospital.

Meanwhile, in a secure, soundproofed room beneath the Voss estate, the final loose thread was being tied.

Frank Moran sat strapped to an iron chair, sobbing uncontrollably.

His face was bruised from sweat and terror. When the heavy door opened and Adrian Voss walked into the room accompanied by Emma, Frank began to babble.

"Emma! Emma, please! God, please tell him!" Frank wailed, tears streaming down his fat, flushed cheeks. "Nolan threatened me! He said he was going to burn down the diner! He said they’d kill my family if I didn't set you up!"

Emma stood before her former boss. For five years, she had feared this man’s temper, endured his insults, and begged him for extra shifts just to buy insulin for her mother.

Looking at him now, she felt no anger—only pity for a coward who had sold his soul to pay off his own greed.

Emma looked at Adrian and signed:

He is lying. Nolan didn't threaten Frank's family. Nolan promised Frank a ten percent cut of the riverfront casino profits.

Adrian nodded slowly. He stepped forward and placed a single document on the small table in front of Frank.

It was the deed of ownership for Moran's Grill, along with the surrounding commercial lot beneath the elevated tracks—property now worth millions due to the upcoming riverfront expansion.

Frank blinked through his tears. "What... what is this?"

Adrian signed to Emma, and Emma translated aloud in a cold, steady voice:

"Mr. Voss has purchased your diner's outstanding mortgage from the bank. You have exactly twelve hours to pack your personal belongings and leave the state of Illinois. If you ever set foot in Chicago again, or if you ever approach my mother, you will be handed over to the state penitentiary where your former business partners are waiting."

Emma leaned down, looking Frank dead in the eyes.

"The diner belongs to me now, Frank. And unlike you, I will make sure the people who work there are treated with dignity."

Frank hung his head, weeping in complete defeat.

Adrian tapped Emma’s shoulder. When she turned, he signed with quiet pride:

Let the past burn, Emma. It is time to build your future.
