Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The following morning arrived with cold Chicago sunshine slicing through the autumn mist.

At 8:00 a.m., Emma was escorted down to Adrian’s private study—a cavernous room lined with thousands of leather-bound books, ancient maps of the Great Lakes, and massive digital monitors displaying stock exchanges, freight routes, and security feeds across five states.

Adrian was already at work behind a massive desk of reclaimed walnut. Spread out before him were dozens of financial ledgers and personnel files.

When Emma walked in, he looked up immediately. A subtle spark of brightness flashed in his gray eyes before returning to his usual composed focus. He gestured for her to sit in the leather chair beside him.

Adrian passed her a folder marked with red ink.

Inside were photographs of Frank Moran, several high-ranking city inspectors, and three executives from Voss Development.

Adrian signed:

Nolan did not work alone. For the past eighteen months, he systematically skimmed funds from our shipping terminals and laundered them through Frank Moran’s backroom gambling rings. They were preparing to sell our Lake Michigan shipping routes to Marco Moretti.

Emma felt a chill run down her spine. "How much did they steal?" she mouthed.

Over forty million dollars, Adrian signed smoothly. And they planned to eliminate me next week during the annual Syndicate Gala at the Drake Hotel.

Emma’s eyes widened. The Gala? With all the city officials and rival families present?

Adrian nodded. Nolan had drafted a forged medical power of attorney. He was going to claim that my hearing loss was accompanied by cognitive decline, declare me unfit to lead, and have me quietly assassinated in a private medical facility while he assumed control of Voss Holdings.

The sheer audacity and cruelty of the plot made Emma sick to her stomach. Adrian was brilliant, razor-sharp, and completely sane. Nolan had weaponized Adrian’s disability, using the silence that surrounded him to build a narrative of weakness.

What do we do now? Emma asked, her hands moving with fierce determination.

Adrian picked up a velvet box from his desk drawer and pushed it toward her.

Emma opened it. Inside rested an exquisite diamond pendant shaped like a teardrop, accompanied by an encrypted titanium earpiece.

Adrian explained in sign:

The Gala is tomorrow night. Nolan’s allies do not know that Nolan is in our custody. We used Nolan's phone to send a confirmation text that the plan is proceeding. Tomorrow night, you will enter the Drake Hotel on my arm as my personal executive liaison.

Emma’s breath hitched. Me? I am just a waitress from the northwest side. I don't belong in ballrooms with billionaires and mafia lords.

Adrian stood up and walked around the desk. He stopped directly in front of her, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone, lifting her chin so her eyes met his.

He signed with one hand, his touch sending a jolt of electric heat through her entire body:

You have more courage and honesty than every person in that ballroom combined. In that room, everyone will try to read my silence. But you will be my voice. Trust me.

May you like

Emma looked into his fierce, unyielding gray eyes. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel like a broke girl drowning in debt. She felt seen. She felt valued.

"I trust you," she signed.
