Chapter 6 - The Mother’s Leverage

While Emma and Adrian prepared their counter-offensive, the remnants of Nolan's network began to realize that something was wrong.

At 2:00 p.m., a secure line rang in Adrian's study. The monitor automatically transcribed the incoming audio using real-time voice-to-text software.

The caller was Marco Moretti—the ruthless heir of the Southside Moretti family.

The transcript scrolled across the screen:

"Adrian, my old friend. Word on the street is that Nolan hasn't checked in with his usual contacts today. We had an appointment regarding the riverfront zoning. I hope you aren't being stubborn about the transition."

Adrian typed his response on a specialized terminal that converted his text into a synthesized, authoritative voice:

"Nolan is busy finalizing the paperwork for the Gala, Marco. You will see everything unveiled at the Drake Hotel tomorrow night."

A pause echoed over the line. Then Marco chuckled—a low, greasy sound that translated into text:

"I certainly hope so, Adrian. By the way, how is the Brooks family doing? I hear the weather at Northwestern Memorial is quite chilly this afternoon."

Emma’s heart stopped. She lunged toward the monitor, her face draining of all color.

Marco knew about her mother.

Adrian’s expression did not change, but the muscles along his jaw turned to iron. He typed back instantly:

"Northwestern is under the exclusive jurisdiction of Voss Security, Marco. If any of your men step within three blocks of Superior Street, they will not leave in an ambulance. They will leave in bags."

The line went dead.

Emma was already panicking, her hands flying in erratic signs:

They know! They know about my mother! Nolan must have left files on her!

Adrian grabbed Emma’s shoulders firmly, grounding her instantly. His touch was warm and steady. He waited until her frantic breathing slowed down, his eyes boring into hers with absolute confidence.

He signed deliberately:

Look at the screen.

He pressed a button on his desk. A three-way camera feed opened on the main monitor.

It showed the underground parking garage of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Four of Moretti’s armed enforcers had just stepped out of an unmarked van. Before they could even draw their weapons, a dozen of Adrian’s tactical operators—dressed in plainclothes—surrounded them from the shadows, disarming them in under ten seconds without firing a single audible shot.

The enforcers were zip-tied and loaded into the back of a secure Voss transport.

Adrian looked down at Emma and signed:

I told you. Your mother is protected. I do not make promises I cannot keep.

Emma let out a ragged breath, tears spilling over her eyelashes. Without thinking, she stepped forward and buried her face in Adrian’s chest.

She expected him to push her away—he was a crime lord, a man of ice and steel. But instead, she felt his strong arms wrap around her back, pulling her close against his chest. She could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his shirt.

For several minutes, they stood together in the center of the grand study, surrounded by the shadows of a brewing war, finding an unexpected oasis of peace in each other’s embrace.

When Emma finally pulled back, blushing slightly, Adrian looked down at her with a depth of tenderness that made her heart race for an entirely different reason.

He signed gently:

Now, Emma. Let us teach Chicago what happens when they underestimate the silent.
