Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Gala Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a dazzling sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, champagne towers, and ruthless ambition.
Over four hundred of Chicago’s most influential figures were gathered: corrupt politicians, federal judges, billionaire developers, and the high-ranking capos of the city's five major syndicates.
When the massive double doors swung open and the maître d' announced, "Mr. Adrian Voss and Ms. Emma Brooks," the entire ballroom fell dead silent.
Whispers erupted instantly like a wave of locusts.
"Who is that woman?"
"Where is Nolan Pierce?"
"Look at her... she’s holding his arm."
"Is it true Voss has lost control of the docks?"
Adrian walked into the room with the majestic, terrifying grace of a monarch entering conquered territory. His head was held high, his expression an unreadable mask of sovereign power. Beside him, Emma matched his stride, radiating poise and untouchable confidence.
At the far side of the room, sitting at a VIP table draped in crimson silk, sat Marco Moretti and Councilman Thomas Sterling.
When Marco saw Adrian walk in—healthy, commanding, and flanked not by Nolan, but by a stunning woman wearing the Voss family emeralds—Marco’s champagne flute shattered in his grip.
Councilman Sterling turned pale as a sheet.
Emma felt the venomous stares converging on them, but she felt no fear. Adrian’s arm beneath her hand was solid as iron. She could feel the steady cadence of his movement.
Adrian led Emma directly to the head table. With effortless chivalry, he pulled out a chair for her before taking his own seat.
Marco Moretti leaned across the table, his face twisted into a mocking sneer. "Adrian! How delightful of you to join us. We were worried you were feeling unwell. And where is Nolan? He usually holds your leash."
The insults were designed to provoke. But Adrian, unable to hear the words, simply watched Marco’s lips move.

Adrian did not react. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and placed a sleek black flash drive and a bound leather dossier on the white linen tablecloth.
He looked at Emma and gave her a single, decisive nod.
