Chapter 2 - The Silent Code Between Enemies

The room fell into a suffocating quiet. The only sound was the faint hum of the central heating and the distant crackle of the fireplace at the far end of the room.

Nolan Pierce tilted his head, his smile slipping just a fraction. "Emma? Is there a problem? Mr. Voss doesn't like hesitation. Just nod and step to the side."

Nolan's tone was smooth, professional, and dripping with disguised poison. He thought he had complete control. To Nolan, Adrian was locked in a world of silence, dependent on Nolan's lips and hands to interpret reality, while Emma was merely a disposable pawn from a cheap greasy spoon.

Emma didn't nod. She didn't look at Nolan.

Instead, she raised her hands. Her fingers were steady despite the terror freezing her blood.

She looked directly at Adrian Voss and signed:

The man beside you is lying. I am a waitress. Frank Moran told me I was hired to cater a dinner for four thousand dollars. I know nothing about your shipments or your debts.

Adrian Voss did not flinch. But his pale gray eyes narrowed with lethal intensity. A subtle shift occurred in his posture; the relaxed, detached posture of a bored crime boss vanished, replaced by the coiled tension of a panther ready to strike.

Nolan, seeing Emma move her hands, gasped aloud. His polished mask shattered instantly. "What the hell are you doing?" Nolan snapped, lunging forward to grab Emma’s wrist. "Don't sign to him!"

Before Nolan’s fingers could touch Emma's skin, a heavy silver lighter slammed onto the table with the force of a gunshot.

Adrian had moved. He didn't raise his voice—he couldn't hear it—but the raw authority radiating from him pinned Nolan to the floor. Adrian didn't look at Nolan. He kept his piercing gaze locked on Emma.

Adrian lifted his hands and signed with fluid, razor-sharp precision:

Why did Frank Moran send you?

Emma replied in sign, keeping her movements clear:

Frank owes money. He received a call yesterday. He told me the catering girl canceled and that I would earn enough to pay my mother's nursing home bill. He tricked me.

Adrian turned his head toward Nolan.

The temperature in the dining room seemed to drop below freezing. Nolan was sweating now, his handsome face turning pale. "Adrian, listen to me," Nolan said aloud, waving his hands frantically in sloppy, broken signs. She is lying! She is working for the Moretti family! Moran sold us out to them!

Emma watched Nolan's panic. She noticed how Nolan intentionally omitted half of what he spoke out loud, altering his signs to make her look like an assassin or an informant.

Emma immediately signed to Adrian:

He spoke the name Moretti to the air, but he signed that I am an enemy spy. He has been controlling what you hear and what you see. Test him.

Adrian's jaw tightened. He leaned back in his leather chair, his silver-and-dark hair catching the light. He picked up his pen and wrote two words on another card:

Search Nolan.

Adrian slid the card to the two massive bodyguards standing near the oak doors.

"Wait! Adrian, no! What is this madness?" Nolan shouted, backing away toward the windows. "I've served you for seven years! You're going to trust a diner tramp over your own chief of staff?!"

The guards did not ask questions. They moved like iron statues. One seized Nolan by the shoulders, forcing him down onto his knees, while the other systematically emptied Nolan's pockets onto the mahogany table.

Out came two smartphones. One was the encrypted company device. The other was a burner phone—cheap, plastic, and vibrating with an incoming text message.

Adrian reached out and picked up the burner phone. He unlocked it with Nolan's thumbprint by forcing the man’s hand down onto the sensor.

The text on the screen, illuminated in the dim light, read:

Is the waitress delivered? Tell Voss she confessed to the theft so we can hit the Southside warehouse tonight while he is distracted.

The message was signed: M. (Moretti).

A deadly silence fell over the room. Adrian stared at the screen for ten long seconds. When he raised his eyes, there was no anger in them. There was only the cold, absolute finality of a judge who had just passed a death sentence.

He looked at Nolan, who was now weeping and trembling against the carpet.

Adrian signed to his guards:

Take him to the basement. Keep him breathing until I have every name.

The guards dragged Nolan out of the room. The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving Emma Brooks alone in the massive dining hall with the most dangerous man in the city.

Emma’s knees suddenly lost their strength. The adrenaline that had kept her upright began to drain away, leaving her shaking uncontrollably. She braced herself against the edge of the sideboard, gasping for breath.

She had survived the lie. But now she was alone with Adrian Voss, knowing the darkest secrets of his empire.

Adrian stood up. He was tall—easily six-foot-two—and every line of his tailored suit accentuated the raw power beneath it. He walked slowly around the table toward her.

Emma froze, her heart hammering against her ribs.

May you like

Adrian stopped three feet away. He looked down at her, not with malice, but with a strange, profound curiosity. He raised his hands and signed slowly, gently, as if speaking to a frightened doe:

You saved my life tonight, Emma. Sit down. You are safe here.
