Chapter 8 - The Underground Forensic Laboratory
Dr. Sarah Miller locked the reinforced doors of her private laboratory in the basement of the university medical center.
Looking at Emma and Elena, Sarah murmured, "I don't need a machine to see they are mother and daughter. The resemblance is undeniable."
"The court needs indisputable scientific proof, Sarah," Jonathan said.
Sarah gently took sterile buccal swabs from Emma, Elena, and Jonathan.
"Why are you testing me?" Jonathan asked.
"To completely disprove any claim that Emma was fathered by your late brother through an anonymous surrogate," Sarah explained, loading the samples into a high-speed PCR thermal cycler. "This rapid sequencer analyzes 24 STR genetic loci. We will have certified results in forty-five minutes."

Suddenly, the security monitors in the lab flashed red. Richard’s attorneys and armed security guards were storming the building.
"Lock the lab from the inside!" Jonathan ordered, picking up a heavy steel fire extinguisher. "Don't open this door until that printer finishes. I’ll hold the corridor!"
