Chapter 14 - Mending Scars and a Rebuilt Family

Three months later.

The dark, oppressive atmosphere of the Sterling Estate was gone, replaced by bright colors, open windows, and the laughter of a child. Jonathan and Elena established the Elena Vance Foundation for Missing and Exploited Children, using the trust’s vast resources to help mothers locate stolen children nationwide.

On the back patio overlooking the blooming rose gardens, Emma was coloring a large drawing.

"Look, Daddy! Look, Mommy!" Emma beamed.

The drawing showed three figures holding hands under a smiling yellow sun: "Best Dad Ever," "Best Mom Ever," and Emma wearing her silver heart necklace.

Jonathan ruffled her hair. "That is a masterpiece, peanut. It goes right on the center of the refrigerator."

Elena leaned gently against Jonathan’s shoulder. "I was so terrified you would hate me for taking away the life you built."

Jonathan took Elena’s hand in his. "You didn't take away my life, Elena. You completed it. We gave Emma what she always deserved—a real family."
