Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Rainstorm

Thunder rattled the towering stained-glass windows of the estate.

Elena Vance took three hesitant steps forward, her worn shoes squeaking against the wet marble. She ignored the glittering jewels and the stunned stares of the elite guests. Her gaze was locked entirely onto Emma.

"My baby..." Elena whispered, her voice fracturing on a ragged sob.

Celeste recovered from her shock, screaming at the security guards: "Get this gutter trash off my property immediately!"

Two guards moved forward, but Jonathan stepped in their path like an iron wall. "Touch her, and you answer to me."

Jonathan turned to Elena. Up close, the resemblance between her and Emma was undeniable.

"Who are you?" Jonathan asked softly.

"My name is Elena Vance," she said through her tears. "Six years ago, on the night of October 14th, I gave birth to a baby girl at St. Jude Memorial Hospital. Three hours later, Dr. Robert Harrison told me my daughter had died of respiratory failure in the incubator. They refused to let me see her body, claiming she had to be cremated immediately due to biological contamination."

Elena pointed an accusatory finger at Richard, who was struggling to his feet from the shattered glass.

"I spent six years living in hell, visiting an empty grave!" Elena cried. "Three weeks ago, Dr. Harrison suffered a massive heart attack. Consumed by guilt on his deathbed, he called me. He confessed that Celeste and Richard Sterling paid him two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to fake my daughter's death records and steal my newborn child!"

Jonathan looked through the envelope. Beneath the birth registry was a carbon copy of an offshore wire transfer signed by Richard Sterling, along with a forged Certificate of Fetal Demise.

Jonathan’s world crumbled beneath his feet.

For six years, Jonathan had built his entire life around Emma. When his brother died in a car crash months before Emma’s supposed birth, Celeste had handed him the infant, claiming the child was his late brother's legacy. Jonathan had stayed awake through the nights, taught her how to walk, and loved her more than his own life.

And it was all built on a monstrous lie.

"Why?" Jonathan turned to Celeste, his voice trembling with devastating fury. "Why would you steal an innocent mother's child and give her to me?!"

Cornered and desperate, Celeste shrieked: "Grandfather’s will! The seventy-million-dollar family trust!"

The puzzle pieces snapped together. The Sterling Trust had an unbreakable clause: the seventy-million-dollar fortune would only be unlocked if the next generation produced a direct heir before Grandfather’s eighty-fifth birthday. Otherwise, everything would be donated to charity.

Celeste was infertile. Richard was sterile. Jonathan’s brother had died childless. To secure the seventy million dollars, they bought a living baby, faked her death, fabricated a bloodline connection, and handed the child to Jonathan to raise as the heir.

"You used an innocent child to steal a fortune..." Jonathan muttered.

"We gave her a life of luxury!" Richard yelled, wiping blood from his forehead. "She has private tutors! What would she have had with this penniless waitress? You should thank us!"

CRACK!

Jonathan’s right fist struck Richard’s jaw with concussive force. Richard flew backward, collapsing unconscious onto the marble floor in a pool of blood and broken teeth.

Elena dropped to her knees, looking at Emma: "Hello, my sweet angel..."

Emma touched her own left cheek, mirroring the dimple on Elena’s face. "Are you... my real mommy?"

Elena broke into uncontrollable tears. "Yes, baby. I am your mommy."

Celeste seized a heavy silver candelabra, lunging at Elena’s back. Jonathan reacted instantly, twisting Celeste's wrist until she screamed in pain and dropped the weapon.

"The police are coming, Celeste," Jonathan said coldly. "And you will spend the rest of your life in a cell."

He scooped Emma into his arms and extended his hand to Elena. "Come with me. We are leaving right now."
