Chapter 9 - The Poisoner's Web: Vanessa’s Deadly Counterattack

Muffled automatic rounds chewed through the antique wooden banister, sending splinters flying across the foyer.

“Cover!” Marcus bellowed, returning fire in controlled, lethal bursts.

Julian grabbed Elena by the waist, shielding her with his body as he dragged her behind a massive stone fireplace. Marcus’s tactical team advanced with military precision, flanking the two mercenaries stationed on the staircase and neutralizing them in a matter of seconds.

“Clear!” Marcus called out. “The basement stairs are to the left, Mr. Vance!”

Julian and Elena sprinted down the narrow, spiraling stone stairs leading to the underground vaults of the manor. The basement was a labyrinth of wine cellars, antique storage rooms, and reinforced concrete corridors.

At the end of the long corridor, the reinforced steel door of the master safe room stood wide open. Inside, illuminated by the harsh glow of an emergency work light, stood Vanessa Sterling.

She had stripped off her ruined wedding gown, now wearing black tactical gear and heavy combat boots. Her face was smudged with dirt and rain, her eyes wild, bloodshot, and completely insane. In her left hand, she held a thick leather-bound ledger—Thomas Vance’s original will. In her right hand, she held a glass beaker containing a glowing, viscous chemical liquid, and a lighter.

“Stay back!” Vanessa screamed as Julian and Elena entered the threshold of the safe room. “Take one more step, Julian, and I burn your father’s will and dump twenty liters of liquid Sarin neurotoxin into the estate's underground ventilation system! Everyone in this valley dies in five minutes!”

Julian raised his hands slowly, his face like stone. “It’s over, Vanessa. Marcus is in federal custody. Your bank accounts are frozen. The FBI has surrounded the entire county. You have nowhere to run.”

Vanessa let out a manic, shrill laugh that echoed off the concrete walls. “You think I care about the money anymore, Julian? You humiliated me! You had me dragged out of our wedding in front of everyone who ever looked up to me! And for what? For this pathetic, worthless little servant girl!”

Vanessa pointed the lighter directly at Elena, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

“She ruined everything!” Vanessa shrieked. “I spent three years seducing you, pretending to care about your stupid charity galas, pretending to love you, all to secure my family’s rightful place at the top of Wall Street! And she destroyed it in twelve seconds!”

Elena stepped forward, standing side-by-side with Julian, refusing to be intimidated by the madwoman’s threats.

“You didn't love Julian, Vanessa,” Elena said, her voice steady, calm, and powerful. “You don't love anyone. You killed Julian’s father because he saw through your mask. You are nothing but a thief who thought a diamond ring and an expensive dress could hide how empty and rotten you are inside.”

Vanessa’s face twisted into an expression of sheer, murderous rage. “I will make you watch him die first!”

Vanessa flicked the lighter and threw it toward the stack of confidential patents while lunging forward to shatter the toxic chemical beaker against the floor!
