Chapter 4 - Julian’s Midnight Visit: A Debt That Cannot Be Repaid

“Don't move,” the fake orderly whispered, his voice dead and devoid of emotion.

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. The assassin was dressed in standard blue hospital scrubs, but his cold, predatory eyes and tactical stance belonged to a trained killer. He raised the silenced barrel, aligning the iron sights directly between Julian’s eyes.

In a fraction of a second, Julian reacted.

Instead of diving for cover, Julian launched himself forward with explosive speed, slamming his shoulder into the gunman’s midsection before the man could squeeze the trigger. The two men crashed violently into the corridor wall outside Room 412. A muffled thwip-thwip echoed as two suppressed rounds tore into the ceiling tiles, raining white plaster dust down onto the floor.

“Elena! Stay inside and lock the door!” Julian roared as he wrestled the killer against the wall.

Elena didn’t lock the door.

Adrenaline surged through her veins, overriding every instinct of fear. She saw the assassin overpower Julian, driving a vicious elbow into Julian’s ribs and forcing him to his knees. The hitman brought the pistol up to Julian’s temple.

Elena grabbed the heavy stainless-steel IV drip pole from beside her father’s bed and charged out into the hallway. With a fierce scream of rage, she swung the steel pole like a baseball bat, striking the hitman squarely across the side of his helmet-covered head with a deafening metallic clang.

The assassin stumbled sideways, dazed, his grip slipping from the weapon. Julian seized the opening instantly, executing a sweeping leg kick that sent the assassin crashing face-first onto the linoleum floor. Julian pinned the man's arm behind his back and drove his knee into his spine, neutralizing him in seconds.

Heavy footsteps pounded up the stairwell as three large men in dark tactical suits and earpieces—Julian’s private Vance Global security team—flooded the hallway with weapons drawn.

“Sir! Are you secure?” the lead bodyguard, a towering ex-Navy SEAL named Marcus Vance (no relation, but Julian’s most trusted protector), shouted as he secured the hitman with zip-ties.

“I’m fine,” Julian breathed heavily, wiping a streak of sweat and plaster dust from his forehead. He looked up at Elena, who was still holding the dented steel IV pole, her breathing ragged, her eyes blazing with fierce courage.

A slow, genuine smile spread across Julian’s face despite the danger. “Remind me never to get on your bad side, Miss Morales.”

Elena dropped the IV pole, her hands suddenly trembling as the adrenaline began to fade. “He... he was going to kill you.”

“Marcus,” Julian commanded, standing up and dusting off his tuxedo pants, “take this piece of trash down to the secure holding facility at our Hudson Yards compound. Strip him of all communications, run his biometrics through Interpol, and find out which private mercenary firm Marcus Sterling hired him from.”

“Understood, Mr. Vance,” Marcus replied, dragging the unconscious assassin down the emergency stairwell.

Julian turned back to Elena, taking her trembling hands into his own. His touch was warm, grounding her in the chaotic reality of the hospital corridor. “We need to move your father right now. We can’t wait until six in the morning. They know he’s here.”

Within fifteen minutes, a specialized medical ambulance escorted by two armored black SUVs pulled into the hospital’s underground loading bay. Mateo Morales, safely sedated and stabilized on a mobile oxygen ventilator, was transferred into the armored ambulance under the watchful eyes of Julian’s elite security detail.

Elena stood beside the ambulance doors, watching her father being secured. Julian walked up beside her, draping his heavy wool coat over her shoulders. The scent of expensive cedarwood, amber, and crisp rain enveloped her, instantly calming her racing thoughts.

“You’re coming with us, Elena,” Julian said softly. “You can’t go back to your apartment in Queens. They’ve likely already ransacked it looking for backup copies of that video.”

“Where am I supposed to go?” Elena asked, looking up at the towering glass skyscrapers of Manhattan in the distance. “I’m just a catering server. I don’t belong in your world.”

Julian looked down at her, his eyes serious and unwavering. “Tonight, you saved my life twice. You are under the protection of Vance Global now. You will stay at the Vance Penthouse. And tomorrow morning, we are going to walk into the federal courthouse together and finish what Vanessa and her father started.”

May you like

Elena looked back at the armored vehicle carrying her father toward safety, then back at Julian’s extended hand. For the first time in her life, she felt that she didn't have to fight the world alone.

She placed her hand in his. “Let’s bring them down.”
