Chapter 10 - Betrayal in the Penthouse: Harris Sells His Soul

In that split second of ultimate danger, Julian and Elena moved as one synchronized force.

Julian lunged forward, his coat sweeping out to smother the burning lighter before the flames could catch the irreplaceable original will of Thomas Vance.

At the exact same moment, Elena sprinted across the concrete floor and tackled Vanessa around the waist before the beaker could hit the stone. The two women crashed violently against the steel filing cabinets. Elena locked her hands around Vanessa’s wrist, twisting with all the strength she had built over years of heavy physical labor.

“Let go of me, you bitch!” Vanessa screamed, trying to gouge Elena’s eyes with her free hand.

Elena didn't flinch. She drove her forehead forward in a sharp, decisive headbutt that struck Vanessa squarely on the bridge of her nose. Vanessa shrieked in agony as her nose cracked, her grip failing completely. The chemical beaker slipped from her fingers, but Elena caught it mid-air with her right hand, securing the deadly toxin inches from the floor!

Julian was instantly at Elena’s side, sweeping Vanessa’s legs out and pinning the criminal heiress to the cold concrete floor. Marcus and his tactical team flooded the safe room, securing Vanessa in heavy titanium cuffs.

Vanessa sobbed, spitting blood onto the floor, completely broken. “You can’t do this to me... my father will destroy you all...”

“Your father is currently being transferred to ADX Florence Supermax, Vanessa,” Julian said with cold finality. “And you will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary where no amount of Sterling money can buy you a single privilege.”

Marcus hauled Vanessa up and dragged her out into the custody of federal marshals waiting outside.

Julian turned to Elena. He gently took the chemical beaker from her trembling hands and placed it into a secure hazardous materials container. Then, he looked down at her, checking her face and arms for injuries.

“Are you hurt?” Julian asked, his voice thick with raw emotion and profound concern.

“I’m fine,” Elena breathed, leaning against his chest. “Just a little bruised.”

Julian wrapped his strong arms around her, pulling her close against his beating heart. In that dark, cold basement, surrounded by the ghosts of his family's past, Julian held Elena as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.

“You saved my father’s legacy, Elena,” Julian whispered into her hair. “You saved everything.”

Just then, Marcus returned, holding an encrypted satellite phone. “Sir, the FBI just raided the luxury penthouse of Mr. Harris, the catering banquet manager.”

Julian pulled back slightly, looking at Marcus. “And?”

“Harris broke down completely,” Marcus reported with a grin. “He surrendered a secret safe containing twenty recorded phone calls between himself and Vanessa Sterling. The recordings prove that Vanessa orchestrated the murder of your father, Thomas Vance, two years ago, paying Harris to swap Thomas’s daily heart medication with the synthetic Carfentanil compound. The case against the Sterling family is one hundred percent airtight. First-degree premeditated murder, treason, and corporate terrorism.”

Julian closed his eyes, a profound sense of peace and closure washing over his soul for the first time in two agonizing years. Justice for his father was finally served.
