Chapter 3 - Blood Money and the Secret Hospital Ward

Julian stepped further into the room, his towering presence making the small hospital room feel even more confined. He looked down at Mateo Morales, noting the steady rhythm of the heart monitor and the complex array of oxygen delivery machines hooked up to the wall.
“You came all the way out to Queens in the middle of the night?” Elena asked, still clutching the metal pitcher defensively. “Your wedding just imploded on national television. The press is hunting you.”
Julian let out a bitter, exhausted breath. “The press can tear each other apart for all I care. My lawyers are handling the corporate PR. But Detective Miller mentioned that you left the precinct looking terrified. And my head of personal security intercepted an encrypted ping directed toward Saint Jude’s hospital servers twenty minutes ago.”
Elena’s eyes widened. “The phone call... they really tried to hack my dad’s machines?”
Julian nodded grimly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted tablet, setting it on the bedside table. “My private cybersecurity team rerouted the hospital ward's primary life-support mainframe to a closed, military-grade satellite loop five minutes ago. Nobody can touch your father’s oxygen lines now. Not Vanessa, not her family’s private contractors, nobody.”
Elena felt the crushing weight on her shoulders lighten for the first time in hours. Tears spilled over her eyelashes, tracing hot paths down her cheeks. She lowered the pitcher onto the tray table and sat back down in the vinyl chair, burying her face in her hands.
“Why are they doing this?” Elena whispered, her voice breaking. “She had everything. She was marrying a billionaire. Why did she need to kill you on your wedding night?”
Julian walked over and pulled up a wooden chair, sitting directly across from her. Up close, Elena could see the raw pain etched into his handsome features. Beneath the polished exterior of a tech mogul, he was a man who had just discovered that the woman he loved was an assassin.
“Vanessa didn’t marry me for love, Elena,” Julian said, his voice laced with cold fury. “Six months ago, Vance Global developed an autonomous AI medical diagnostic code worth an estimated two billion dollars. Our board of directors was split on whether to take the company public or keep it private. Vanessa’s father, Marcus Sterling, is the chairman of Sterling Apex Capital. They hold heavy short positions on my company’s stock.”
Elena frowned, trying to process the complex financial jargon through her exhaustion. “Short positions?”
“They bet hundreds of millions of dollars that Vance Global would collapse,” Julian explained. “If I died tonight without an heir and without a prenuptial agreement, Vanessa would have inherited my controlling voting shares. She would have immediately merged Vance Global with her father’s firm, liquidated our core patents, and walked away with over three hundred million dollars in cash while bankrupting thirty thousand employees.”
Elena gasped. “It was an execution disguised as a wedding.”
“Exactly,” Julian said. “And you blew their entire six-month conspiracy to pieces with a twelve-second video.”
Julian reached out, his warm, strong hand gently covering hers where it rested on the armrest. Elena felt a jolt of electricity at the contact, but Julian’s touch was entirely protective, filled with profound respect.
“You saved my life, Elena,” Julian said, looking straight into her dark brown eyes. “And you refused a twenty-thousand-dollar bribe from Harris when you needed that money more than anyone in that ballroom. That kind of integrity doesn't exist in my world.”
“My father taught me that taking dirty money only makes you a slave to the person who gave it to you,” Elena replied quietly.
Julian looked at Mateo, a soft, solemn expression crossing his face. “Your father is a wise man.”
Julian stood up and pulled a heavy black leather document folder from his inner coat pocket. He placed it gently on Elena’s lap.
“What is this?” Elena asked.
“This is an immediate transfer authorization,” Julian said smoothly. “At six this morning, a specialized private medical transport will arrive here. Your father is being transferred to the Vance Memorial Neuro-Pulmonary Institute in upstate New York. It is the premier respiratory facility in the country. He will have a private suite, a dedicated team of three top pulmonary surgeons, and experimental cellular therapy that has a seventy percent chance of fully repairing his lung tissue.”
Elena’s heart stopped. She looked down at the documents, her hands shaking so violently the paper rattled. “Mr. Vance... no. I can’t accept this. That clinic costs hundreds of thousands of dollars a month! I could never repay you.”
“You already paid for it,” Julian said softly, his voice firm and unyielding. “You paid for it when you chose to protect a stranger instead of saving your own skin. The Vance family pays its debts, Elena. Mateo Morales will receive the best medical care on earth for the rest of his life, fully paid for by my private trust.”

Before Elena could find the words to thank him, the heavy hospital door was suddenly kicked open from the outside.
A man dressed in an orderly’s uniform stood in the doorway, but in his gloved right hand was not a medical clipboard—it was a silenced Glock pistol leveled directly at Julian Vance’s chest.
