Chapter 7 - Elena’s New Armor: From Catering Maid to Executive Ally

The news of Marcus Sterling’s arrest and the FBI raid on Vance Global headquarters hit the global news cycle like a thermonuclear bomb. By midday, international headlines were screaming:
“STERLING EMPIRE COLLAPSES: BILLIONAIRE BRIDE AND FATHER CHARGED IN ATTEMPTED POISONING AND $80M CORPORATE FRAUD!”
“THE BRAVE CATERING HERO: HOW A 24-YEAR-OLD SERVER SAVED TECH HEIR JULIAN VANCE AND EXPOSED MASSIVE SYNDICATE!”
Outside the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan, hundreds of reporters, camera crews, and cheering citizens gathered behind barricades. Public opinion had swung completely in Elena’s favor. The narrative of an honest, hard-working young woman standing up against corrupt billionaires had captured the heart of the entire nation.
Inside the Vance Global executive suite, the atmosphere was quiet, yet charged with intense emotion.
Julian stood at his desk, watching the live news coverage on the wall monitor. The company’s stock had already rebounded by thirty-five percent, reaching an all-time high as investors cheered the removal of the corrupt board members and praised Julian’s decisive leadership.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Elena stepped into the office, holding a folder containing the latest medical update on her father. She had changed into a simple, elegant dark blue dress, looking every bit the sophisticated professional.
“Come in, Elena,” Julian said, his face breaking into a warm, genuine smile that reached his eyes. The exhaustion that had weighed him down for the past twenty-four hours seemed to vanish whenever she entered the room.
“The doctors at the Vance Institute just called,” Elena said, her voice filled with joyful emotion. “They started my dad on the cellular therapy protocol two hours ago. His oxygen levels have already stabilized by fifteen percent. The chief surgeon said he could be breathing entirely on his own within two months.”
Julian walked around his desk, stopping just inches from her. “That’s the best news I’ve heard all day.”
Elena looked down at the luxury surroundings, then met Julian’s gaze. “Julian... I don't know how to thank you. You gave my dad a future. You cleared my name. You gave me back my life.”
“You saved my life twice, Elena,” Julian replied softly, his voice rich and deep. “Without you, I would be lying in a morgue right now, and my father’s legacy would have been dismantled by criminals. I owe you everything.”
Julian reached out and gently tucked a loose strand of dark hair behind Elena’s ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek—the same cheek that Vanessa had struck the night before. Elena leaned subtly into his touch, her heart skipping a beat as a powerful, undeniable connection sparked between them.
“I have a proposition for you, Elena,” Julian continued, his eyes holding hers.
Elena smiled slightly. “Another boardroom battle?”
“No,” Julian chuckled softly. “I’m creating a new division within Vance Global—the Vance Foundation for Healthcare and Labor Justice. It will be funded with fifty million dollars to provide free, top-tier medical care for working-class families and legal protection for hospitality and blue-collar workers who face corporate exploitation.”
Elena’s eyes widened with wonder. “Julian... that would change thousands of lives.”
“I want you to be the Executive Director,” Julian said.
Elena gasped, taking a step back in disbelief. “Me? Julian, I don’t have an Ivy League MBA. I have an associate degree from community college and years of working catering and retail.”
“You have something infinitely more valuable than an MBA, Elena,” Julian said firmly, stepping forward and taking both of her hands into his. “You have absolute integrity, courage, and a deep understanding of what real people go through every single day. I don’t need another corporate shark. I need someone with a heart of gold. I need you.”
Elena looked into Julian’s sincere, earnest eyes. For years, she had felt invisible, discarded by a society that only valued wealth and status. But Julian saw her. He truly saw her strength, her intellect, and her soul.
“I accept,” Elena whispered, a radiant smile lighting up her face.
Before Julian could reply, the secure red landline phone on his desk began to ring with a sharp, urgent tone.

Julian picked it up, putting it on speaker. “Vance here.”
“Julian, it’s Arthur Pendelton,” the lawyer’s voice was strained, breathless with alarm. “We have a critical emergency. Vanessa Vance escaped from police custody during her transport to the federal detention center ten minutes ago.”
