Chapter 12 - The Mask Falls: The Confrontation at the Grand Charity Gala
Two months later.
The Grand Plaza Hotel—the very same luxury ballroom where the poisoned wedding had taken place—was once again illuminated by thousands of starlight chandeliers. But tonight, there were no arrogant socialites sneering at servers, no corrupt corporate deals being struck in shadowed corners, and no deceitful brides.
Tonight was the inaugural gala for the Elena Morales Foundation for Healthcare and Labor Justice.
Over five hundred guests filled the hall: prominent philanthropists, working-class labor leaders, nurses, doctors, and international advocates. The catering staff was treated with the highest honor, paid three times the standard wage, and given front-row seats at the executive tables.
The grand doors opened, and a hush fell over the magnificent room.
Julian Vance walked into the ballroom, looking devastatingly handsome in a classic midnight-blue tuxedo. And on his arm, radiating breathtaking beauty, was Elena Morales.
She wore a custom off-the-shoulder emerald velvet gown that perfectly complemented her warm skin and dark, cascading curls. Around her neck was a delicate diamond pendant—a gift from Julian, shaped like an unbreakable shield. She walked with supreme confidence, grace, and an aura of genuine kindness that captivated every person in attendance.
Julian took the stage, standing behind the crystal podium.
“Two months ago,” Julian began, his deep voice carrying across the silent hall, “I stood on this very marble floor, blind to the darkness that surrounded me. I believed that wealth and status were shields against tragedy. But I was wrong. I was saved by the purest courage this city has ever seen.”
