Chapter 10 - THE HOTEL ALLEYWAY

The bathroom window was small, old, and faced the brick alleyway three stories below.

“We’ll never fit through there!” Sarah cried, coughing from the dust.

“We have to!” I shouted, pushing the casement outward until the rusted hinges popped.

Footsteps crashed into the bathroom behind us.

The wooden door gave way with a thunderous snap!

I scrambled onto the narrow window ledge, the cold night wind whipping my bridesmaid dress around my legs.

“Megan, help me!” Sarah sobbed, climbing up beside me.

I grabbed her wrists, hauling her out just as a gloved hand lunged past the window frame, missing my ankle by inches.

We dropped onto a large canvas laundry bin stacked against the alley wall below.

The plastic cracked beneath our weight, spilling linens across the wet pavement.

We scrambled to our feet, ignoring the sharp pain in our knees and elbows.

“Where are we going?!” Sarah gasped, gasping for air in the freezing rain.

“The front lobby!” I yelled, pulling her toward the street.

“If we reach the crowd, Victoria’s men can’t touch us!”
