Chapter 8 - A Father’s Awakening and the Stolen Medical Files

They burst through the heavy double doors of the Intensive Care Unit on the top floor of St. Jude’s. The medical staff, led by Dr. Alistair, were surrounding Marcus Morales’s bed. The heart monitor was beeping with frantic, irregular alarms; the telemetry screen displayed a lethal arrhythmia—ventricular fibrillation was setting in.

"His pulse is fading!" Dr. Alistair shouted, holding the defibrillator paddles. "Charge to two hundred joules!"

"Stop!" Elena screamed, rushing to the bedside. "We have the Neural-Shield antidote! Administer it directly into the central line!"

Dr. Alistair didn't hesitate. He took the cold titanium canister from Julian’s hand, uncapped the pre-filled syringe, and injected the clear blue serum directly into Marcus Morales’s IV port.

For sixty agonizing seconds, the room fell dead silent except for the erratic, dying tone of the heart monitor. Elena dropped to her knees beside her father’s bed, grasping his cold, calloused hand in hers.

"Dad... please," she whispered, her tears falling onto his pale skin. "Please don't leave me. You promised mom you would watch me grow old. Fight it, Dad. Please fight it!"

Julian stood behind her, his hand resting firmly on her trembling shoulder, his heart pounding in silent prayer.

Suddenly, the flatline tone beeped once... twice... and then transformed into a strong, rhythmic, steady pulse.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

The jagged red lines on the monitor stabilized into a perfect, healthy sinus rhythm. The oxygen saturation numbers climbed rapidly: 85%... 92%... 98%.

The color returned to Marcus Morales’s weathered cheeks. His chest rose and fell in deep, natural breaths. Slowly, painfully, his eyelids fluttered open.

"E... Elena?" the old man rasped, his voice weak but completely coherent.

Elena broke down in a torrent of joyful tears, burying her head against her father’s chest. "I'm here, Dad! I'm right here! You're safe! You're going to be okay!"

Marcus smiled weakly, his trembling hand lifting to stroke his daughter’s hair. "I had a terrible dream, sweetheart... I dreamed you were in danger..."

"I'm safe, Dad. Thanks to him," Elena said, looking up at Julian.

Marcus Morales turned his gaze to the tall, wounded billionaire standing beside the bed. Julian stepped forward, taking the old machinist’s hand with profound respect.

"Mr. Morales, my name is Julian Vance. Your daughter is the bravest woman I have ever known. She saved my life, and I swear to you on my family's name, no harm will ever come to either of you again."

Marcus looked at Julian’s torn, bloodstained suit, then at his daughter’s fierce, protective expression, and nodded slowly. "Take care of her, son. She’s worth more than all the gold in this world."

While Dr. Alistair completed the medical assessment, Thomas entered the ICU room, his arm bandaged from a superficial shrapnel wound. He carried a heavy leather satchel recovered from the leader of the mercenary squad on the roof.

"The local police and federal marshals have secured the perimeter, Mr. Vance," Thomas reported quietly. "The shooters were neutralized or taken into custody. And we found this in their vehicle."

Julian unzipped the satchel. Inside was an encrypted external hard drive and a stack of classified corporate documents stamped with the seal of Blackwood Holdings.

As Julian scrolled through the decrypted files on his tablet, his eyes widened in sheer shock.

"This isn't just about Vance Global," Julian whispered, the full scope of the conspiracy finally unveiling itself.

Elena walked over to his side. "What is it, Julian?"

Julian looked up, his jaw set in cold, unforgiving fury. "Eighteen months ago, my father didn't die of natural congestive heart failure. Arthur Blackwood and Donald Thorne poisoned him using the exact same synthetic digitalis compound they gave to Vanessa. They murdered my father so that I would inherit the company prematurely, making it easy for Vanessa to seduce me, marry me, and execute the final phase of the takeover."

Elena felt a chill run down her spine. "They killed your father... and they tried to make you die the exact same way."

"Yes," Julian said, his voice dropping to a deadly, resolute whisper. "And tomorrow morning at the grand charity gala, in front of the entire world, I am going to destroy every single one of them."
