Chapter 5 - The Wolf in Velvet: Vanessa’s Powerful Accomplice Unmasked

Forty-eight hours after the explosive courtroom showdown, a deceptive calm fell over the city. But beneath the surface, the war for Vance Global had reached a fever pitch. Julian had relocated Elena to the private executive quarters inside the Vance Global Headquarters—a towering glass monolith in midtown Manhattan equipped with military-grade biometric security and private tactical guards.
Elena sat in Julian’s private conference room, looking over financial charts and corporate rosters. For the first time in years, she wasn't exhausted from physical labor. Her father was breathing comfortably in the state-of-the-art medical suite at St. Jude's, showing miraculous signs of stabilization under the care of top specialists.
Julian entered the room, loosening his tie, his face marked with deep strain. He was followed by Marcus Vance, his loyal chief technology officer and childhood friend.
"We found the missing link, Elena," Julian said, sitting down opposite her. "Vanessa wasn't working alone. She couldn't have executed this plan by herself."
"What do you mean?" Elena asked, leaning forward. "Was Arthur Blackwood directing everything?"
"Arthur was the money," Marcus Vance explained, projecting a complex organizational tree onto the digital display wall. "Arthur wanted Vance Global's proprietary quantum-encryption satellite network—the 'Aegis System.' The Blackwood defense conglomerate has been trying to crack military satellite security for years. If Julian died without an heir, Vanessa would have inherited Julian’s voting majority, merged the two companies, and transferred the Aegis source code directly to Blackwood Holdings."
"So Vanessa was just the weapon," Elena realized, her stomach turning. "Who supplied the poison? That wasn't something you can buy on the street."
"Exactly," Julian said grimly. "Digitalis glycoside in that ultra-refined molecular form is manufactured in only one laboratory in North America: BioVance Pharmaceuticals—a subsidiary of my own company."
Elena gasped. "Someone inside your own inner circle gave her the poison?"
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes flashing with pain. "There are only three people who had authorized administrative clearance to sign out that specific synthesized compound from the research vault in New Jersey. One was my late father. The second was me. And the third was our Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board..."
Julian pressed a button, and a photograph appeared on the screen: a distinguished, charismatic man in his late fifties with silver temples and a warm, grandfatherly smile.
"Donald Thorne," Elena read the name beneath the portrait. "Your father's oldest business partner?"
"The man who gave the eulogy at my father's funeral," Julian said, his voice trembling with quiet rage. "The man who promised my dying father that he would protect me and guide Vance Global until I was ready to take full control. Thorne has been secretly colluding with Arthur Blackwood for over two years. They promised Thorne twenty percent of the merged conglomerate and the permanent position of Chief Executive Officer once I was out of the picture."
"Does Thorne know you found out?" Elena asked, feeling the danger closing in from all sides.
"Not yet," Julian said. "He believes the trail ended with Vanessa's arrest. He thinks Arthur's legal team will eventually suppress the catering video and force a plea deal. But Thorne is scheduled to host the annual Vance Global Charity Gala at the Hudson River Pier this Saturday. That is where Arthur Blackwood and Donald Thorne intend to finalize the illegal proxy vote to strip me of my executive power while I am distracted by the criminal trial."
Suddenly, the glass doors of the boardroom chimed. Julian’s private security chief, Thomas, stepped inside, looking alarmed.
"Mr. Vance, we have an emergency," Thomas reported. "A courier just delivered a package to the main lobby addressed personally to Miss Morales. It bypassed our standard exterior screening because it carried an official seal from the State Medical Board."
Thomas placed a sleek, silver metallic case on the table. Elena’s heart seized. She recognized the emblem on the lock.
Julian signaled for his security team to scan the case for explosives and biological agents. Finding none, Thomas carefully unlocked the latches and opened the lid.
Inside lay a single, chilled glass vial containing a clear blue liquid—identical in shape to the one Vanessa had used at the wedding—and a handwritten note on expensive linen parchment:
Miss Morales,
A single drop of this compound was added to your father’s primary IV line at St. Jude’s twenty minutes ago. The antidote exists in only one place: in my pocket. If you wish to receive the neutralizing agent before his heart stops at midnight, you will leave the Vance Global Tower alone, destroy the original video file on your cloud server, and meet me at the South Street Seaport at ten o'clock.
Do not test my resolve. Your father has four hours to live.
May you like
— D. Thorne
Elena screamed, clutching the edge of the table as her world shattered once more.
