Chapter 4 - An Offer Behind Bulletproof Glass

The Manhattan Criminal Courthouse was surrounded by a wall of television satellite trucks and security personnel when Julian’s armored motorcade arrived. Flashbulbs erupted like a strobe light as Julian stepped onto the pavement, his arm firmly guiding Elena through the aggressive throng of reporters shouting questions about infidelity, corporate espionage, and murder.
Inside the high-security courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Behind the defense table sat Vanessa Blackwood, having shed her ruined wedding gown for a pristine, tailored navy suit provided by her legal team. Her hair was perfectly styled, her demeanor that of an innocent, grieving victim of a terrible misunderstanding. Beside her stood Arthur Blackwood—a ruthless, silver-haired patriarch with cold, reptilian eyes that seemed to view the entire courtroom as property he had already purchased.
Presiding over the bench was Judge Harrison Vance—Julian’s paternal uncle, a man notorious for his lavish lifestyle and questionable financial dealings.
"Your Honor," Arthur Blackwood’s lead defense attorney, a predatory legal titan named Sterling Vance, addressed the bench with booming confidence. "The state’s case against my client rests entirely on an unauthenticated, twelve-second video clip taken by an unstable, disgruntled temporary catering staff member with a documented financial crisis. The alleged 'toxin' was nothing more than an emergency homeopathic heart regulator prescribed for Mrs. Vance's acute panic attacks. We demand that all charges be dismissed immediately, or at minimum, that Mrs. Vance be released on her own recognizance."
District Attorney Sarah Lin stepped forward, slamming a heavy folder onto the podium. "Your Honor, the forensic division of the state police has confirmed the substance in the vial was digitalis glycoside mixed with synthetic paralytics—a lethal compound banned under federal law! Furthermore, we have confirmed that the defendant threatened the life of the key witness’s family immediately after the crime!"
Judge Harrison Vance adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and frowned down at the prosecution. "The court must weigh the credibility of the primary source. The witness, Miss Morales, is an individual with severe personal financial debts. Under the standard rules of judicial discretion, the reliability of such digital evidence must be subjected to months of independent forensic scrutiny before it can justify the detention of a prominent citizen. Bail is set at two million dollars, bonded immediately."
A smug smile spread across Vanessa’s face. Arthur Blackwood patted his daughter’s shoulder with cold triumph.
"Your Honor, objection!" D.A. Lin shouted. "The defendant represents an extreme flight risk!"
"Overruled," Judge Vance said, raising his gavel. "The hearing is ad—"
"Wait!"
Julian Vance’s voice cut through the grand chamber like a whip. He walked past the mahogany railing and stood directly before the bench, holding up a certified digital drive.
"Before you strike that gavel, Uncle Harrison," Julian said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings, "you might want to review the transaction logs recorded at four o'clock this morning on the offshore accounts of Blackwood Holdings. It appears that an anonymous shell corporation transferred exactly three million dollars into an unlisted account in the Cayman Islands registered to your private estate trust."
The entire courtroom erupted into pandemonium. Reporters stood on their benches, shouting into their phones. Judge Harrison Vance’s face turned from haughty arrogance to chalk-white terror.
"This is an outrage! You are out of order, Julian!" the judge stammered, his hand trembling as he gripped his gavel.
"If you grant bail to the woman who tried to murder me, those banking records will be transmitted directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice within sixty seconds," Julian stated coldly. "Along with the security footage from the Grand Plaza Hotel showing Arthur Blackwood meeting with you in the private parking garage less than five hours ago."
Arthur Blackwood surged to his feet, his composure shattering. "You arrogant little bastard! You are destroying your own family!"
"You destroyed this family the day you sent your daughter to marry me for my shares," Julian shot back with icy disdain.
Judge Harrison Vance, sweating profusely under the glaring courtroom lights, looked at the reporters, looked at the federal prosecutors sitting in the front row, and slowly lowered his gavel.
"In light of... potential conflicts of interest," the judge choked out, "I am recusing myself immediately. The defendant will remain remanded in custody without bail until a new presiding judge can be assigned by the state judicial council."
Vanessa’s facade completely collapsed. "Father! Do something! You promised me I wouldn't spend another night in this cage!" she screamed, thrashing against the court bailiffs as they clamped heavy irons onto her wrists once again.

As she was dragged toward the holding cells, Vanessa locked eyes with Elena Morales. Her gaze was pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You think you won, you little roach?" Vanessa shrieked over the roar of the room. "You have no idea who is really behind this! You and Julian will never make it to the trial alive!"
