Chapter 7 - The Ambush in the Lower East Side

The heavy glass door of Thorne’s office resisted Julian’s sidearm fire, the reinforced ballistic glass spiderwebbing but holding firm. The toxic gas was rapidly filling the corridor, making Elena’s lungs burn and blurring Julian’s vision.

"Thomas, the breaching charge!" Julian commanded, his voice strained as he fought for breath.

Thomas pulled a compact magnetic breaching strip from his tactical vest, slapped it across the electronic lock mechanism, and pulled Julian and Elena around the corner. "Fire in the hole!"

A sharp, deafening blast shattered the lock into molten fragments. Julian kicked the door open, lunging inside the air-filtered executive office. He dragged Elena inside and slammed the manual seal, cutting off the deadly gas cloud.

Elena collapsed onto the carpet, coughing violently, her chest heaving as she inhaled the clean air. Julian rushed behind Thorne’s mahogany desk, ripping open the hidden wall safe behind a vintage oil painting. Inside lay the black titanium master override card and a physical ledger containing encrypted offshore transfer codes.

"Got it!" Julian declared, grabbing the card. "We have the access key!"

Marcus Vance’s voice crackled over the secure comms: "Julian! The automated fire-suppression system in the sub-basement has neutralized the gas! The automated synthesizer is prepped! You have ninety minutes before your father's biological window closes!"

They sprinted down the emergency stairwell, bypassing the disabled elevators, and descended into the subterranean research laboratory. Julian swiped the master card, pressed his palm against the biometric scanner, and entered the secure cleanroom. The massive robotic synthesizer whirred to life, its robotic arms mixing compounds at blinding speed.

Twelve minutes later, a sealed pneumatic canister emerged from the cooling chamber containing two doses of the Neural-Shield 9 antidote.

"We're running out of time," Elena said, clutching the cold metal canister. "We have to get to the roof!"

They rushed back up to the private helipad, where the twin-engine Vance Global helicopter was idling, its rotor blades whipping the freezing rain into a blinding fury. As the chopper lifted off into the stormy night sky, Manhattan looked like a sprawling sea of electric lights beneath them.

Within seven minutes, the helicopter banked hard over the Hudson River, descending toward the illuminated rooftop helipad of St. Jude’s Hospital. But as the landing skids touched down, the night was shattered by a deafening roar.

A high-caliber sniper round tore through the cockpit windshield, showering the cabin in glass.

"Sniper! 2 o'clock, water tower on the adjacent building!" Thomas roared, tackling Julian and Elena onto the floor of the cabin as a second bullet pierced the helicopter’s turbine housing.

The helicopter lurched violently to the side as black smoke billowed from the engine. The pilot fought the controls, slamming the bird down hard onto the concrete pad just as a team of four heavily armed mercenaries dressed in unmarked black tactical gear stormed through the rooftop stairwell.

"Arthur Blackwood's private death squad," Julian hissed, pulling Elena behind the reinforced steel landing barrier. "They knew we would bring the antidote here!"

Gunfire erupted across the rooftop, bullets sparking off the concrete parapet. Thomas returned fire with lethal efficiency, dropping two of the advancing mercenaries, but the remaining shooters pinned them down behind the barrier.

"Miss Morales! The door to the ICU stairwell is thirty yards to your left!" Thomas shouted over the deafening cacophony of gunfire. "I will draw their fire! You and Mr. Vance run for the door!"

"I'm not leaving you!" Elena shouted back.

"Elena, your father has fifteen minutes left!" Julian yelled, grabbing her hand. "We go together, now!"

Thomas stepped out from the cover, firing his automatic rifle in a sustained burst that forced the mercenaries to dive behind the air conditioning units.

Julian pulled Elena into a full sprint across the rain-slicked rooftop. A bullet grazed Julian’s shoulder, tearing through his jacket and drawing blood, but he didn't slow down. He kicked the heavy fire door open, pushed Elena inside the stairwell, and slammed the reinforced steel door, throwing the deadbolt just as a barrage of bullets hammered against the outside of the metal.

Breathing heavily, bleeding from his shoulder, Julian looked at Elena. "Are you hurt?"

May you like

"I'm fine! But you're bleeding!" she cried, looking at the dark crimson stain spreading down his sleeve.

"It's just a scratch," Julian said through gritted teeth, holding up the canister containing the antidote. "Let's save your father."
