Chapter 3 - Eviction Notice and the Mysterious Guardian Angel

Dawn broke over New York City in a haze of gray mist and bitter autumn rain. Within the guarded sanctuary of Julian Vance’s fortified penthouse estate, Elena sat in a sunlit kitchen, wearing clean clothes provided by the estate staff. The morning television was already blaring with sensationalized headlines: TECH HEIR'S WEDDING NIGHT NIGHTMARE: BLACKWOOD HEIRESS FRAMED BY DISGRUNTLED MAID?
The media machine had begun its work. Arthur Blackwood’s public relations network had already flooded the morning news shows with paid commentators suggesting that the video had been manipulated with artificial intelligence, that Julian Vance was suffering from severe psychiatric paranoia, and that Elena Morales was an extortionist with a criminal history of trying to shake down wealthy employers.
Elena watched the screen in disbelief as a prominent news anchor read an anonymous quote claiming Elena had once been fired from a luxury hotel for stealing jewelry. "It's all lies!" Elena exclaimed, standing up from the table. "I have never stolen a single penny in my entire life! My employment record is spotless!"
Julian walked into the room, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, carrying a secure briefcase. His face was set in granite. "Truth is the first casualty when a billionaire family faces prison, Elena. Arthur Blackwood spent five million dollars overnight to purchase those headlines. But that’s not the worst of it."
Julian placed an official document on the marble counter in front of her. It was an urgent medical transfer notice from St. Jude’s Respiratory Pavilion—the clinic where Elena’s father was currently on life support.
"What is this?" Elena gasped, scanning the legal jargon with mounting horror.
"Arthur Blackwood pulled strings at the executive board level at six o'clock this morning," Julian explained calmly, though his eyes burned with fury. "They have officially classified your father as an 'administrative liability' due to unpaid legacy balances and are ordering his immediate discharge and transfer to an underfunded municipal hospice across the state line. If they move him while he is on high-flow oxygen, the transport could cause a fatal respiratory arrest."
"No... no, please God, no!" Elena sobbed, tears streaming down her face. "He won't survive a two-hour ambulance ride in this rain! Vanessa warned me... she said she would do this!"
"She won't get the chance," Julian said, checking his watch. "Thirty minutes ago, my legal team completed the cash acquisition of the entire medical holding company that owns St. Jude’s Pavilion. I bought the building, the land, and the managing corporation. As of eight o'clock this morning, Arthur Blackwood no longer sits on that board. I do."
Elena stared at him, stunned into silence. "You... you bought the entire hospital network?"
"I told you last night that I would settle your father's debt," Julian replied softly. "Your father has been moved to the private executive suite on the top floor under twenty-four-hour armed guard. The best pulmonary specialists in the country are boarding a private jet from Johns Hopkins right now to take over his case. No one will ever threaten his life again, Elena. That is my promise to you."
Overwhelmed with emotion, Elena sank onto the chair, burying her face in her hands. For two grueling years, she had carried the crushing weight of her father’s illness entirely alone—working eighty hours a week, surviving on stale bread, enduring the insults of arrogant employers, constantly fearing the day the hospital would pull the plug on the only family she had left. And now, a man she had met less than twenty-four hours ago had moved mountains to save him.
"Why are you doing all this for me, Julian?" she asked, looking up through her tears. "You could have just written a check and sent me away into hiding."
Julian walked over and stood beside her, looking out the panoramic window at the Manhattan skyline below. "Because for my entire life, I have been surrounded by people who smile to my face while calculating how much I am worth to them dead. Vanessa pretended to love me for eighteen months, all while secretly planning to poison me on our wedding night to seize Vance Global. In all my thirty years, you are the only person who had everything to lose, yet chose to stand up and do what was right without asking for a single cent in return."
Before Elena could respond, Julian’s phone buzzed with an encrypted alert. He glanced at the screen, his expression darkening.
"Arthur Blackwood has just arrived at the city detention center with a team of twenty defense attorneys," Julian said, pocketing the device. "They are attempting an emergency bail hearing before Judge Vance, my estranged uncle, who is deeply indebted to the Blackwood family. If Arthur gets Vanessa out on bail today, the evidence will disappear, the witnesses will be silenced, and Vanessa will be on a private jet to a non-extradition country before sunset."

Elena wiped her eyes, her posture stiffening with renewed determination. The fear that had paralyzed her was replaced by a cold, righteous anger.
"Take me to that courthouse, Julian," Elena said, her voice clear and unwavering. "Let them bring their expensive lawyers. I took the video, I saw her face, and I will look that judge in the eye and tell him the truth."
